Maybe - though he played on the same teams as Nilsson, Newy, and Mullen. But the main point is - Nilsson was head and shoulders above anyone else on the team skill-wise. But he wasn’t a guy that they felt they wanted to keep and they traded him for a 27th pick. The rest is history.

I have a feeling the core will still be intact after tomorrow after lasts night win. Seems like it's what this core does every year before the trade deadline.

Has nothing to do with last night none of them are UFAs

every year? you mean when they are in a playoff spot in recent seasons

Any competent GM wouldn't be fooled this many times. I am not expecting core changes tomorrow but I want at least a few picks added.

Only UFAs are being traded...what core player is UFA?

The UFAs the Flames have - have questionable value, perhaps no value.
And certainly they shouldn't be adding players.

I get that people are frustrated, but there are rationale reasons why it may be a quiet deadline around these parts.

Yup. It's frustrating but it also makes sense.

And believe me if we don't see bigger changes in the off-season my frustration level will be through the roof.

Exactly and it won't be from a lack of effort. It takes two to make a deal. Imagine the interest we would be getting next year?

The frustration comes from being told how hard it is to make deals and you see other teams being able to make them. So doesn’t appear to be as hard as we are led to believe.

We have a player who by all accounts wants out on an expiring deal and has a playoff pedigree. That seems like a no brainer. We also have a rh shot c which tend to be on demand around this time of year. But we get told to expect a quiet deadline. With two seemingly tradable assets in a year when we are not making the playoffs. That’s what rubs people the wrong way.

Less than 24 hours left and time left for Brad to make some deals. But the messaging about a quiet deadline and the difficulty in making deals (especially given our current position in the standings) is the source of frustration. We don’t want to hear about how hard Brad tried or how tough the trade market is. It’s like they are building in excuses for inaction when there are opportunities to acquire picks and or prospects.

My hope is that we just see some sort of “win” for the team under difficult circumstances. I’ve been pretty damn negative on here lately, but it’s all just out of frustration. I love the damn team and want reasons to cheer/be excited and the losses/lack of success just isn’t adding up to being able to be hopeful about where things could go.

I really hope Tree gets some tidy work done, where even if it’s not fantastic, it’s something we can say was smart and will help - even if in the smallest of ways.

Sell me hope. I’m clamouring for it.

Completely agree with you about this happening, but I am always surprised about the lack of counterthink on this by NHL GMs. If you have two underachieving teams making a hockey trade, wouldn't you want to do this with 20 games left in a wasted season? That way going into the summer you have a feel for what you actually have and don't waste another season finding out. This is why a Philly-Calgary, NYR-Calgary, AZ-Calgary, Buffalo-Calgary deal makes the most sense to me now.

Should note that I don't think NYR is underachieving...just that their odds of playoffs this year are low due to a tough division.

Agreed,

like others have mentioned I expect nothing will happen in terms of trades before the deadline

I totally understand their pending UFAs have limited to no value.

however Its disappointing to see a lottery team that can't find a way to acquire draft picks in this type of a season.

If they don't trade Bennett tomorrow then they are planning on keeping him. Bleh.

My guess if they don’t get at least a 3rd for him, they will keep him for expansion draft. I have a feeling they are going to try and lure Seattle from Gio. Think it’s a big mistake. Trade Bennett for what you can get and let Seattle take Gio .

Based on the prices being paid, I wish the Flames would sell Giordano.

The prices being paid are for players on expiring contracts. Not many, if any, are looking to grab Gio at this point in the season.
