Default Meng Wanzhou expected to plead guilty today

Quote:
The Huawei Technologies chief financial officer will pay a fine as part of a plea deal, said the sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Her court appearance was first reported by Reuters.

Sources said if the New York court accepts the deal, Canadian Crown attorneys will appear in a Vancouver court later today to stay extradition proceedings against Meng. She could be free of house arrest as early as today.
I would expect to see the two Canadians released in the next few days. Great news for them and their families obviously.

What a boondoggle this has all been.

Well I hope so, they've been sitting in a rotten Chinese Prison for nearly 4 years.

If she pleads guilty and pays a fine, that's great but Canada needs to announce that they're following the rest of our allies in banning the Huawei from 5 G and any other key research projects in universities etc.

I presume most of the court costs will be born by Canadian taxpayers?

Thanks, best friend America.

I hope they are released shortly but I fear they won’t so that China can preserve the facade that they are not linked. A few months from now they quietly are let go.

Why did anyone expect any other result. Its up to Canada to negotiate their release. Biden isn't going to give a crap about the Canadian effects.

Wouldn't China want the world to know they are linked? They'll deny it explicitly, but by releasing them it makes it very apparent to everyone not to F with their citizens.

What a giant waste of time. Thanks USA.

At least now I can resume my quarterly excursions to China without fear of getting tossed in the clink (again).

Will Huawei still sponsor HNIC? I always thought that was kind of awkward.

I don't know much about the Canadians they have hostage, but are we sure that they are completely clean? Just asking, because I really don't know. I think at least one of them was publicly a sympathizer of North Korea which seems like a red flag.

It was more than that; Spavor had ties to Kim Jong-un and other North Korean officials and lived in North Korea at one point. This article is from before he was even arrested:

Quote:
While only a handful of Westerners can say they are welcomed into North Korea regularly, Michael Spavor appears to move around the restrictive country freely.

Spavor, a Canadian national who runs a nonprofit that offers trips to North Korea, even says he's friendly with high-level members of the North Korean government, including the country's leader, Kim Jong Un.

While many foreign media outlets were barred from North Korea's military parade on Thursday, Spavor was somehow front and center, streaming an unfiltered view of the tanks and missiles that rolled by.
https://www.businessinsider.com/mich...jong-un-2018-2

Quote:
And Mr Spavor's close ties to North Korea, which is an ally of China, only adds to the intrigue surrounding this growing diplomatic feud.

He runs an organisation called the Paektu Cultural Exchange, which promotes tourism and investment into North Korea.

He facilitated the well-publicised and unlikely friendship between Mr Kim and the American basketball star Dennis Rodman.

Mr Spavor arranged for the pair to meet in 2013, describing the visit as a "blast".

"That was the most amazing experience I've had in my life... we hung out for three days," he told Reuters news agency last year.

Images taken at the time, and shared on social media, show Mr Spavor drinking long island iced teas with Mr Kim after going jet-skiing near the port city of Wonsan.

That doesn't mean China's charges aren't totally trumped up, but the idea that this was just some random Canadian in China getting arrested isn't accurate either.

No Michaels released, SNC fraud, Tabbara released with no jail time or record, all within days of the election.

All the skeletons are finally being pushed through the closet and exploding on us at the same time, what else will the next weeks bring?

Oh and let's give a big middle finger to our 'friends' in the US, how the heck are they friends?

I knew Michael Spavor back at the UofC in the early 2000s. He was just a guy that was really into Korea and language studies and was always hanging out with foreign exchange students...But he was a genuine nice guy that was just interested in foreign cultures at the time.
