Icon47 2021-2022 Washington Capitals Update Thread

Its been a while since GM Bagopucks made a post. Usually he posts at a higher frequency but given the CPHL Entry Draft work and off season there hasn't been much time.

GM Bagopucks had a plan to go into the draft and take Eklund at 2. The night before the draft, he began second guessing himself. Eklund is very slick and smart but we got talked into deciding that Brandt Clarke is the guy with massive offensive potential and the knocks against him seemed superficial. Bagopucks fell in love with the player and decided that Clarke was the guy. Now given the view from his arm chair isnt very good and who knows.

Kent Johnson, Xavier Bourgault were two players we were hoping for and were happy to land. Olen Zellweger was just the guy we thought was good value after Ayrton Martino was stolen by Knut a pick before us.

Below is the roster we started with when we took over the this franchise about 10 or 12 games into the season last year. I am still cringing from looking at it.

Tyler Ennis - Mikael Backlund - Kyle Okposo
Zack Smith - Cody Eakin - Drake Caggiula
Tobias Rieder - Nic Dowd - Justin Bailey
Michael Ferland - Curtis Lazar - Hudson Fasching

Erik Cernak - Mark Pysyk
Brent Seabrook - Brendan Smith
Matt Irwin - Martin Marincin

Craig Anderson
Ryan Miller

Fast forward to now and some of you are still cringing at my roster. We are taking a balanced approach to assembling a team.

A.Iafallo (72) - P.Danault (73) - P.Kessel (72)
N.Niederreiter (71) - B. Sutter (69) - D.Brown (69)
A.Chiasson (67) - R.Faksa (68) - T.Terry (68)
A.Ladd (64)- ???????? - A. Erne (67)

M.Giordano (74)- S.Gostisbehere (69)
D.Forbort (68) - O. Klefbom (71)
???????? - J.Tinordi (66)

T.Jarry (87)
?????????

Some of the trades include moving P.K Subban, Mike Smith and Cap this year for next. Players coming in through trades include Henrik Borgstrom, Adam Erne, Nino Niederrieter, Andrew Ladd and Libor Hajek.

The upgrade from last year doesn't look like much but our AHL, ECHL is stronger with a years worth of development, signings and trades. It still remains to be seen if anyone from the AHL will jump up and take a few open spots at the CPHL level

Washington Capitals will try to be competitive this year as our goal will again be to make the playoffs. The current roster is weak with lots of holes but Bagopucks has been telling all his staff not to worry as he has been personally delivering magic performance enhancing potions to drink for the upcoming sim season to all his players. Troy Stecher refused to drink it and hence why he is stuck in the minors.

TLDR; we still suck but Bagopucks is delusional of building something special. So nothing new.

You are turning into a "half decent" GM! Thats at least a quarter better than NYI!

Capitals have been very stingy this offseason. Fans are not happy as we went in with a fair bit of cap space and only managed to snag a few players. Marc Staal joins us on the blue line. Craig Anderson returns to us after his season last year where he played 40 games for us. Jonathan Bernier was also another goalie who comes in to back up Tristan Jarry.

Jack Johnson joins us via trade from his recent CPHL Championship with the Wild. Hoping he can bring some of his winning ways.

The fans haven't been too happy with the GM as the GM has taken a patient approach by trading cap this year for next year. Some of the teams WSH has sent money to are TOR, NYI and DAL. It remains to be seen if the conference rivals can be caught in the standings even after sending them money this year.

Capitals as always will be active and in the middle of things.

Washington Capitals roster is starting to fill out with the last few moves that have been made. Bringing in O.Sundqvist, J.Neal, B.Connolly and C.Hutton has been the last few moves to finalize the roster. The CPHL scoring looks weak but the team is hoping that the team is greater than the sum of its parts.

Trading of Bernier was a tough decision as we really liked that contract but he is replacable and addressing the C position on the 4th line is something we wanted to do.

Below is our current projected roster. We are only posting so Harry can have a team he can beat on paper.

A.Iafallo (72) - P.Danault (73) - P.Kessel (72)
N.Niederreiter (71) - B. Sutter (69) - J.Neal (68)
A.Chiasson (67) - R.Faksa (68) - T.Terry (68)
A.Anisimov (67) - O.Sundqvist (68) - B.Connolly(67)

M.Giordano (74)- S.Gostisbehere (69)
D.Forbort (68) - O. Klefbom (71)
M.Staal (68) - J.Johnson (68)

T.Jarry (87)
C.Anderson (79)

Scratches - T.Graovac (65), N,Mikkola (68), A.Erne (67), A.Ladd (64), J.Tinordi (66), C. Hutton (78)

Preseason is rolling on quickly for the Capitals. They are 1-3 with the lowest GF in the league. Capitals fans were not happy with the GM when they traded one of their "top 6" forwards in Nino for a what the fans are calling a "third liner" in Sanford. There has also been criticism of the GM for signing some low rated players like A. Anisimov and J. de la Rose who didnt really help the team secure a playoff spot last season.

Capitals GM was not happy with the team after being the worst PP team that the team hasn't scored a single PP goal in 4 games. To makes matter worse, the team went 0-8 in the PP in their last game and gave up a short handed goal. Changes needed to be made. We think Sanford while rated lower can find a way to improve the line he plays on. We need all our lines to be clicking to be an effective team or else it is going to be a long season of scoring problems.

Below is our current projected roster.

A.Iafallo (72) - P.Danault (73) - P.Kessel (72)
Z.Sanford (69) - B. Sutter (69) - J.Neal (68)
A.Anisimov (67) - R.Faksa (68) - O.Sundqvist (68)
J. de la Rose (66) - B.Boyle (67) - B.Connolly(67)

M.Giordano (74)- S.Gostisbehere (69)
D.Forbort (68) - O. Klefbom (71)
M.Staal (68) - J.Johnson (68)

T.Jarry (87)
C.Anderson (79)

Scratches - T.Graovac (65), N,Mikkola (68), A.Erne (67), J.Tinordi (66), C. Hutton (78)

Washington Capitals Update - Figured I should lead by example and make a post about my team

As we write this the Capitals have are coming of a 3 game stretch in 3 days. A fifth of the season has been played and the campaign hasn’t gone very well. With a losing record and team chemistry still up in the air the progress hasn’t been made in the second season for GM Bagopucks.

WSH GM hasn’t been sitting calmly as he has shown his displeasure with some of his players by waiving a new player once a week or so. It seems like half the team has been on waivers. It probably speaks to the terrible quality of players the team has brought in. The team is running a relatively low Cap number and that is on the GM. The lack of progress for this season sits mostly on GM Bagopucks on the approach he has taken.

There are some positives so far. Alex Iafallo and a Philip Danualt are playing well. Kessel and Klefbom are coming off injuries and are being eased into the line up. Some of the other players are trying to find their scoring touch but are unlikely to catch fire unless chemistry clicks.

Capitals also have recently signed free agents Josh Pillar, Jack Matier and Ben Gleason

Some of the prospects in the AHL and ECHL are performing well for the Capitals. In the AHL Liljegren is starting get some cracks at the NHL level, Troy Terry is playing better than he did last season, Tanner Jeannot and Henrik Borgstrom are also player in the NHL. Jacob Peterson had a good camp in the NHL but hasn’t found a way to make it stick. Kyle Okposo also is playing decent in the NHL and hoping to have a bounce back season.

In the ECHL Brendan Brisson has been scoring at a high pace in the NCAA. Seth Jarvis has gotten into a few NHL games and late first round pick Xavier Bourgault is scoring well in the QMJHL. Helge Grans has found himself playing a few games at the AHL level and Brandt Clarke has returned to scoring in the OHL that is functioning this season.

Overall, the teams future pieces are progressing but the CPHL team is struggling to find traction. With 60+ games remaining, Washington will continue to fight for a playoff spot and find sim chemistry. GM Bagopucks thinks it is important to take the time to learn the simulator as it should come in handy as the franchise inches towards the goal of winning the cup.

Below is our current roster.

A.Iafallo (72) - P.Danault (73) - P.Kessel (72)
Z.Sanford (69) - B. Sutter (69) - O.Sundqvist (68)
A.Erne (67) - R.Faksa (68) - B.Connolly (67)
A. Angello (66) - B.Boyle (67) - B.Ritchie (63)

M.Giordano (74)- S.Gostisbehere (69)
D.Forbort (68) - O. Klefbom (71)
M.Staal (68) – B. Harpur (66)

T.Jarry (87)
C.Anderson (79)

Scratches - N,Mikkola (68), J.Tinordi (66), C. Hutton (78)

Some good progress
Some interesting decisions coming up this year as to do you sell off some high rated vets to strengthen the asset base or go for a run

Washington Capitals Update - Figured it had been a month since I typed out an update.

As we write this the Capitals have a 19-16-3 record with a negative goal differential. Almost half the season has been played and Capitals are inching towards the last playoff spot (need to catch Pittsburgh). We have a 8-2-0 record in the last 10 meaning we have either had an easy stretch of opponents or we are finding some chemistry. We lost Giordano, Klefbom and Sanford to injury since our last update. David Savard came up from the farm and filled in beautifully when asked, for that we thanked him and waived him as soon as we can. So the last 30 or so games have gone better than the first 20.

We have continued our search of chemistry by waiving and buying out players we cant get going in the sim. Since the last update we have signed some depth players like Devin Shore, Ryan Carpenter, Mirco Mueller, Jacob de la Rose (for the 2nd time this season) and Dysin Mayo.

When asked what has been the reason of success, GM Bagopucks had this to say, "I have no clue but its working"

Capitals also have recently signed free agents Massimo Rizzo and Matthew Stienburg. Both are putting up points in the NCAA, that might be all we know about them.

Not much to report in terms of prospect update. Brandt Clarke not being selected to WJC-U20 is a disappointment but meh, we will find a way to recover from our heartbreak.

Hope we can continue our strong play of late and see where we stand in the standings closer to the end of the season.

Below is our current roster.

A.Iafallo (72) - P.Danault (73) - P.Kessel (72)
Z.Sanford (69) - B. Sutter (69) - O.Sundqvist (68)
N.Gusev (70) - R.Faksa (68) - D.Shore (66)
Jacob de la Rose (66) - B.Boyle (67) - R.Carpenter (66)

M.Giordano (74)- S.Gostisbehere (69)
D.Forbort (68) - E.Johnson (71)
M.Staal (68) – N,Mikkola (68)

T.Jarry (87)
C.Anderson (79)

Scratches - D. Mayo (59), J.Tinordi (66), C. Hutton (78)

Capitals Update

2021-2022 CPHL regular season was a mixed bag of experience for GM Bagopucks but overall a success as the goal was to make the playoffs without spending too much of the futures.

Making the playoffs came as a large surprise after losing the last two games of the season and letting other teams decide our fate.

At deadline we made 5 player deals to bring in some veterans in Joel Armia, Alex Radulov, Andy Greene, Jay Beagle, Colton Sceviour, Greg Pateryn and Cal Clutterbuck.

Armia is a guy we had shown some interest in early on but his NHL play had dropped further than we had hoped. However, his current rating of 70 OV GM Bagopucks decided to see if the price was right on him. The acquisition price of 2023 3rd and a 2022 5th was fair in my mind given the long term nature of his deal and his NHL play dropping off.

Radulov was another player we had dicussed earlier in the season but the price was too high. Another NHLer whos play in the NHL has dropped off and is on a long term CPHL deal. At 71 OV and the right price of 2022 3rd and a 4th GM Bagopucks is excited to add another forward with some offence to the ranks.

Clutterbuck brings good energy, high CK and DF so we were happy to send Devin Shore in exchange for him without cap. Devin was an RFA but we were okay trading for the improved ratings.

Greene brings veteran leadership to the blue line. We have some young players in the 5/6 slot who could be sat in exchange for Greene providing some stability on the back end. However at a tender age of 38 we do wonder how much workload Greene can handle. Green is on a 2 year deal.

Beagle is a depth C that win faceoffs and strong defensively. He is on a 2 year deal so hoping he can stay productive.

Sceviour is a depth C. GM Bagopucks screwed this deal up and thought he could be moved to the RW/LW. Turns out he can only play C and the league only does position changes in the offseason. So odds are he wont see much action.

Pateryn is a big hard hitting D man who is going to be a depth option if we run into injuries.

We missed out on Allen from Colorado but I guess we cant win them all.

Overall, we acquired players with term without really touching too much of the quality in our draft capital. This was important to us as we are a franchise that is still building while being competitive. We would have preferred to have brought in pending UFAs but we were so late to the party that either that either pending UFAs had found homes or GMs were not in the office.

Now we wait to find out who we play in the first round and how far this team can take us.

Current Roster
A.Iafallo (72) - P.Danault (73) - A.Radulov (71)
J.Armia (70) - B. Sutter (69) - J.Bailey (71)
Z.Sanford (69) - R.Faksa (68) - N. Foligno (69)
O.Sundqvist (68) - J.Beagle (66) - C.Clutterbuck (68)

M.Giordano (74)- S.Gostisbehere (69)
D.Forbort (68) - L.Sbisa (69)
M.Staal (68) – A.Greene (69)

T.Jarry (87)
C.Anderson (79)

Scratches - G.Pateryn (67), D. Mayo (59), N.Mikkola (67), T.Pitlick (67)

Washington Capitals are very excited to have won in the first round of the playoffs against a very good Hurricanes team.

We couldn't have pull this off without our last minute deadline additions. Armia, Radulov and Clutterbuck were all impactful in the series.

We would like to dedicate our series win to all the GMs who knowingly or unknowingly helped me. Midway through the season, we decided to pursue a certain type of team and some of the guys I watched and learned from are Tilley, Cheese, Savemedrzais and Hannah Sniper. So Thank you !!

2021-2022 WSH season ended in a heart breaking fashion. GM Bagopucks sits down to reflect on the season

Playoffs

It has been such an exciting 6 weeks for the WSH Capitals. Our team went on a pretty good run on the back half of the regular season only to clinch a playoff spot via a tie breaker. Carolina series was tough. It was really the first time I had assembled our deadline acquisitions so I had a few unknowns but I was pretty confident in our experience and ability to put up a fight. Winning was a surprise but I think we were a little lucky to make it past round 1. The Ottawa series as a real nail biter for me as I wasn't sure if I could solve their powerplay and their scoring ability. We didnt have the offensive horses of a top team so we needed to make some adjustments to find a way to win a game. Luckily again, we found a way past them. Jersey was a mismatch but I think it came down to in series adjustments that allowed me to move past the Devils. Dallas was obviously the champion and the better team. We just ran out of options and their in series changes were better than ours.

Overall, super happy with the experience of going deep in the playoffs. It is an experience i will cherish and learn from for upcoming seasons. Playoffs feel like a whole different type of play and it is my goal to be in it every year to get the experience.

Disappointment

When I came back to CPHL the goal was to win a championship. We have a plan to do that but to go from a 77 point team to a 88 point team and make the Stanley cup final game 7 in 2 seasons is not what we expected. It is disappointing to lose but honestly, we punched over our weight and we did it multiple times this playoffs. Cant be disappointed with that.

Future

Not much has changed for my future plans. I will take a balanced approach and let my sim experience carry us wherever it may. I have a bunch of picks in the upcoming drafts and I am always looking for more picks. I have some pretty good young players in the ECHL and AHL so I am looking forward to continue to build a perennial contender.

Plans

My plans next year is the same as last year. Make the playoffs. Who knows what happens after that.
