OEL (7.7M effective salary going forward) + random 1.5M fourth line plug that can play up the lineup and provide toughness = 9.2M
Lucic (2.9M effective salary) + Hanifin (4.95M) = 7.85M
The Coyotes could save roughly 1.5M in a deal where the centre piece deal is OEL, Hanifin and prospects/picks.

Arizona has huge cap problems.
They need to get rid of cap, not just cash.

Did anyone expect Stamkos, Tavares or Pietrangelo to test the UFA market? Heck, Johnny Gaudreau has been one of the most prolific scorers in Calgary Flames history yet he’s practically getting run out of town with the absurd number of posts and threads trying to trade him.

Only if you expect Hossa to come back. Otherwise they are fine.

Stamkos never made it to UFA. People were more surprised that Tavares re-signed in New York at all, certainly no one was surprised to see him reach UFA. Pietrangelo, fair enough.

Stamkos went back to TB, and always wanted to.
Tavernas always had a dream to play in Toronto.
Peitrangelo wanted to go back to St. Louis, chose Vegas when that was available.
How many of the premium UFA’s who might be available have dreamed of playing in Calgary?

Could likely be just talk but Markstrom was quoted as Calgary has been a team he has always been interested in and was super happy when they presented him a long term offer

It helps to have Markstrom’s best friend locked up for another four years as a core contributor.
If the choice is that or Edmonton where there’s a 15% chance you could win a Cup because McDavid is that good, and an 85% chance you’ll be hung out to dry and scapegoated, it’s a pretty easy choice.

A very interesting tidbit I remember from Markstrom's initial interview after signing was when they asked him if the Swedish players on the team had spoke to him / convinced him that it was a good landing spot he said it wasn't the main reason, and said something along the line of the Flames have a good reputation with the players and guys speak highly of the club and playing here. It didn't sound like he was just blowing sunshine like some guys do. From what he was saying it sounded like it was common knowledge among the players that Calgary is regarded as a good landing spot.
Conversely, his repulsion with Edmonton probably speaks volumes about the general consensus there. (snickers)

Not a fan of Laine. Ya he can score but he doesn't do much else. He is also super hot and cold. Not to mention if we trade Johnny for him were basically trading our best playmaker. I don't see him as a playoff performer either or a guy who can carry a team. For the money he wants no thanks.

He may seem hot and cold but he’s scored consistently. This season, though, he had more assists than goals, and had his highest PPG ever.
As far as not doing much else, neither does JG, really.

Gaudreau and Laine both do a super important thing really well. Not everyone is going to be Bergeron.

Gaudreau for Laine?
That's probably a yes for me.
1. Get younger
2. Get more control
3. Balance the roster by switching a left shot for a right shot in the top 6

I know, but the complaint was about Laine, like JG was different.
I just think Laine’s game fits the present NHL style more.

Solid top 9. Could always switch LWs on the top two lines.

Laine is not going anywhere to play 2L or the opportunity to play with a defensive centre. Isn’t that why he wants out of Winnipeg?
