I would at the right price and have said so multiple times. Isn't that what all this is about? Right now that price appears to be out of the level the Flames are agreeable to.

Again, he may have far more value to someone else, and knows that, which is why he would want to get to July 1 instead of re-upping with the Flames at what they can afford/value him at..

Also, he may (and likely will) want a NTC as part of any deal he signs. That then diminishes what you can get for him in the future.

The single biggest part of this discussion is whether or not the Flames can gamble and see him possibly walk away for absolutely nothing. IMO there is NO way that can be allowed to happen.

So we're talking instead about signing Backlund at the wrong price?

Of course we want him on a good contract. And almost every good player coming out of restricted free agency gets a no trade clause.

We are talking about either getting him re-signed or trading him. Either way it will have to be decided before Feb 28.

Unless, as i noted earlier, you think BT is willing to gamble that Backlund wont go to July 1. I dont think BT is a big gambler myself.

As for getting a NTC....yes which is why it diminishes the return on him. You limit the buyers market.

Backlund was unbelievable today. That game should prove to anyone that he’s a player you can count on against tough circumstances. His chemistry with Tkachuk is also undeniable. He’s an easy re-sign for me if indeed it’s closer to $5M than $6M.
