Had it in the General Military thread. They say it was a fire works factory or container full of fireworks that went up, which could explain the redness of the blast. But man the size of this blast and the shockwave made me wonder if a weapons factory went up.
Beruit has had a lot of car bombings happening lately, but that's too big for your average car bomb.
When I first saw the blast, I went cold because it looked nuclear.

Holy ####. This reminds me of that apocalyptic looking explosion in China a few years back. Wasn't that some kind of chemical plant?

There's also reports of a second blast, supposedly at the residence of Harari, the former PM who was assassinated. Lebanon is currently awaiting a verdict in the trial of those accused of assassinating Harari. The accused are Hezbollah members.
It would be one heck of a coincidence of there was also some kind of unrelated major accident at a fireworks factory.

Its not confirmed that its a fireworks factory, I've also heard Oil storage facility.
Which could be a good target.
That pressure wave, and it crumpled buildings.

From this view of the initial fire, looks to me like a typical fireworks factory fire. You can see the fireworks going off. Looks like they didn't have the raw materials separated from the factory, and it ignited them in the warehouse creating the massive explosion.

Totally possible. That new angle clearly shows fireworks going off. The second blast at the Harari residence is now "unconfirmed". The fireworks factory, or a nearby building, could also have been targeted.

I saw a comment on Twitter that Harari was just shown on TV and he is fine.

cannot belive you can see entire city blocks lift up and then evaporate. Jaw dropping. Who in their right mind puts an ammo dump right by a fireworks factory? Seems like a crazy stupid thing to do.
Either way, horrific event. Feel for the folks in Beirut.

Lebanon is going through some horrible times right now. Their banks are collapsing and many people are out of work and money. There's been protests and calls for leadership to step down without success.

I'm having trouble figuring out where exactly this is. Does anyone know a close by address or have a pin on a map? I have an interest in the area and haven't heard from anyone yet. And I can't find any specific info among the initial reporting.

Holy ####, that’s terrible. There has to be a a very tragic number of casualties.

This is absolutely crazy and scary. Hopefully the number of casualties is not too high, but it doesn't look to be promising.

That's just horrific looking. I'm nowhere near a physicist, but that explosion doesn't actually come from fireworks, right?
