IFAB earlier this year clarified what is mean by deliberate play by defender. Did he have time, space etc.... Before then this would have been onside but the clarification was done so that "instinctive plays are not considered deliberate.

So Mexico should have little trouble with Saudi, but the Argentina/Poland match should be good.

Australia is probably similar quality to Canada, in an equally strong group, managed to make it out. I don't know if the schedule/order of play benefited them more, but good on them. Had Canada played Belgium last, things might have been different.

Very interesting starting 11 from Argentina. No Paredes in the middle, Lautaro on the bench. Dybala hasn't seen the field yet. And this is a must win game.

Lol! "I want to play Champions' League!!"

Cristiano Ronaldo has a lucrative offer to move to Saudi Arabia on the table after his departure from Manchester United, but the Portugal forward is set to wait until after the World Cup before deciding on his next move, sources have told ESPN.

Al-Nassr are willing to offer him a 3½-year contract worth more than $119 million (£100m) a year.

Or just take an unfathomable amount of money.

That france Tunisia game was farcical at the end. The goal was magically ruled out after the ref had blown his whistle to officially end the game. Nevermind the phantom offside but sounded like the game had officially been ended at least on the TV feed. Ugly officiating

I didnt watch it because at the end it didnt matter. The Aussies were through, the Tunisians were pooched and France farcically played their entire second XI until they realized they were in trouble.

But France won their group so who cares about the rest?

Huh? That was not a phantom offside call at all.

I would take Saudi in that game, they're playing for potential first. Mexico have checked out I think, and their strikers, Vega and Lozano, suck.

although they are starting Henry Martin today, and yes, you have to say it the Spanish way.

I get the whole deliberate play thing…but man that goal should have counted.

If it’s played and Griezman was still in an offside position I’d get it, because it wouldn't have been him deliberately playing the ball backwards, so Griezmann is still offside.

But he intentionally heads the ball for sure and it’s just a poor clearance, and at that point Griezman had reset to an onside position.

Not sure how that’s called back at all.

Getting back onside doesn’t change the call. He’s either offside because he is in an offside position when the French player passes the ball, or there is no offside because the defender intentionally played it. If it was an intentional pass then Griezmann wouldn’t have been offside even if he was standing on the goal line.

The Tunisian intentionally played that ball. He didn't mean for it to go where it went, but he absolutely meant to play it.

Ben White has left England’s squad for personal reasons.
