He ain't retiring. For now.

Honestly, I think he's had enough of Dundon's antics or Dundon may have lowballed him. He could have been good for us (Leadership and playoff experience eh? Age be damned.) but IIRC he and Peters had issues during their one season together.

Veteran guy who went into the conference finals; this speaks to me like he needs more rest and will probably sign with a team that has separated from the pack around the end of November. Takes out the need of a trade to a contender and all the stress that comes with that; good on him for doing what’s best for him.

That guy is amazing. Hes got to be one of the most clutch playoff performers of the modern era, but who cares if hes not there for the whole 82?

Is there/was there any better clutch players than William's or Briere for this generation?

I wonder if this becomes more common in professional sports...the whole load management theory a la Kawhi Leonard.

Maybe for older players, I could see it.

At this stage in his career Williams is a playoff monster, thats who and what you want out of a player like him, hell, its exactly what the Flames need. Someone who brings that whole other level when it counts.

But expecting a 37-year old to play the whole season and then bring another level in the playoffs isnt entirely realistic.

Maybe he doesnt come back, maybe hes won enough.

Didn't Selänne do this at least once? Start a season late?

Niedermayer, Selanne, Sundin, Fisher... it's not an especially new thing, by any means.

If it was just an issue with Dundon, then I don’t see why Williams would not simply sign to play elsewhere.

I think—like others—that this is a calculated move by an older player who is likely to sign a deal later in the season and play for a team that is pushing for a playoff run.

Could be a bit of both.
