Default DotA 2

Not sure if alot of people here played DotA. Was originally custom made on WC3 and became a big hit. Spinoff games such as HoN and league of legends tried to one up DotA, but now the creator of the original hit game is teaming up with valve to make DotA 2.

On a similar vein, Blizzard announced at Blizzcon last weekend that they will be creating an official Blizzard DotA map for Starcraft 2.

I've always wanted to try DotA. Maybe I'll give it a shot. Do you need WCIII to play it? And how about Frozen Throne? Or does it have it's own separate client?

Yes and yes. I've only played with friends. Too many horror stories of n00b bashing. DotA2 should be better with matchmaking and whatnot.

Be prepared to basically get insulted into the ground from the second you play about being a noob. Tried to get into it and the community totally turned me off.

Well I survived plenty of QQ comments in SC and SC2... I think I have a thick enough skin to handle it lol.

There was a picture of Lina in the article. They just changed her to look different to avoid infringment.

That's what I meant though...no more Lina Inverse (granted, 90% of those who played didn't understand the name to begin with...but...). I was sure there'd be a functional equivilent, but nothing with the sentimental equivilent.

Dota was always a fun time with friends, and a hellish nightmare on bnet unless you had a ringer on your team + nobody learning the game. The childish community was pretty bad.

It's a whole new genre really... Have you ever played WC3? It's basically an RTS where you control the Hero unit only, and rather than harvesting resources you kill enemy units and heroes to earn gold and buy items for your hero unit. It's all about working with other players on your team to defeat the enemy team. It requires a tremendous amount of micromanagement skill, strategy and teamwork. I was hooked on HON for about 6 months. To me, it is quite simply the best form of player versus player combat available in any online entertainment.

So what's the best way to get into this game without being trashed to death for being a newbie? Is it okay to just suck it up and throw yourself in, bringing your team down with you, with their smack talk coming down on you for 1 hour?

Well you could start on an AI version. And you'll still suck when you start playing with actual people.

Playing against the AI is a good way to learn how the heck the game works, but the AI sucks. There are games marked off as "N00b games". These are pretty good training grounds to learn how the basics. After that though, you're basically going to have to suck up a few games where you die quite a bit more often than you kill.

I'm really hoping this is going to be awesome!

I've been playing League of Legends after I transitioned away from DotA. I really enjoy League of Legends and if DotA 2 disappoints, at least I have something to fall back on.

League of Legends is a decent clone, and is "free."
