Default FTP Site

I'm looking at setting up a basic ftp site on my home iMac, so my friends & Clients on pc's can upload/download files from me.

I have purchased a domain, and from there, I'm stuck and don't know where to start.

Does anyone have any tips or can point me in the right direction to look for the answers?

Thanks!

you have to open up a port (typically 21 for FTP, or something else if you want more security) on your router. If you have an Apple router then it's easy, but so is with Linksys, DLINK. Typically found under port forwarding (you enter the port you want to open, and which internal IP address to forward that port to, i.e. your iMac with FTP Server on it).

Install some FTP server software (i.e. fileZilla server) and off you go.

Dropbox might be a far more elegant solution for your requirements - you can throw files in your dropbox and provide public links for non-dropbox users, or you can give them the login info and all collaborate on a single Dropbox, or you can share specific folders with other Dropbox users.

FTP is so 90's. And there's more to what you are trying to do than just opening up port 21 on your router. Dropbox is a simpler and more secure alternative in many ways.

+ 1 for dropbox. Sharing login information for a single account probably is the best way to go.

+1 for Dropbox. There are so many uses for it.

Dropbox is the bomb.

But to suggest another possibility: Google Apps Standard Edition (not premier which costs money)

Dropbox is still the best bet I'd say though.

Your internet provider may already provide free FTP services if you still want to go with FTP.

I'm on Shaw and I have FTPs for all my usernames/e-mail accounts.
