Still in shock he left $15m on the table AND went to a non-playoff team AND went to a second/third tier location AND left a great locker room AND still isn't particularly close to family.
Literally none of it makes sense

Agreed. Any of those names. Maybe we can get a Mikey like the cereal kid next.

Well Hamilton signed with New Jersey. It makes sense if you want out of the spotlight.

Had CBJ gone out and outbid the field I’d get it. This is a bottom 3 NHL destination. I’m stunned. There has to have been stuff that fell apart for him today, I don’t have any other explanation.

Having money solves one problem in life and that’s money problems…that’s it.
The same problems you had before you have money are still there.
Would Johnny have netted more signing with Calgary for 8 years and about the same AAV? Not certain, but it would definitely be in the similar range. Besides being in the US, why would he choose Columbus for 7 years over Calgary for 8 years?

Why? Because Gaudreau strung the organization along until the last minute? He negotiated in bad faith.

Wait, new jersey apparently offered 9?
Ok. Something smells in this whole thing.
I have to move on, but I'm a bit perturbed.

Can someone answer me how Treliving lets the leagues second highest scorer walk for nothing and still wakes up tomorrow with a job?
Good with RFA contracts when he has the hammer, but has just presided over one of the largest out-fluxes of talent in flames history.

I’ve only been able to read through to page 38 in this thread, so forgive me if this point has already been raised. I keep reading both in this thread and in preceding threads that he wanted to be closer to family. That seems like perhaps an assumption and may not be accurate. The statements I’ve seen from both Gaudreau’ s camp and the Flames just state it’s for family reasons. That might mean being closer to family, but it could mean a host of other things too. Really. I think all we can safely assume is he didn’t want to be here, in which case it’s best that he left. For everyone’s sake. What the real reason is we may never know.

That he was accusing you of not conducting yourself with dignity, as you just said… not that criticism wasn’t allowed.
There’s definitely some embarrassing criticism among the whole heaping pile of completely fair criticism. It’s all allowed and powderjunkie didn’t say otherwise just… y’know… some people could sound less like what I’m assuming the people who bullied them as pre-teens sounded like.
I’m all aboard the “boo Gaudreau” train though!

Agreed - I think it would be pretty crazy for anyone to try an offer sheet this year.
CBJ actually has about 8M in cap space - capfriendly's current calculation is a 26 man roster with 3 guys on IR.
They have quite a few offence first forwards who aren't particularly noted for 2-way play (Laine, Voracek, Nyquist, Roslovic, Johnny) and 3 very young F's (Sillinger, Johnson, Chinakhov)...in a perfect world they'd probably want to trade an O-guy for a 2-way forward, but maybe some of them are actually good 2-way players?

Because it wasn’t his fault. Tell me how he avoids it without being a mind reader when Johnny (a) misled him a year ago or (b) told the truth a year ago but changed his mind in the interim. Make sure you tell us all how Treliving does in a rental trade for a guy who has a 5 team NMC that probably only has one team he wants to go to, which also can’t afford him, and 4 which are no gos in a trade.

I truly believe he was confused through this process. To many cooks in the kitchen, and not enough sound advice or anchored advice to take.
I do believe he had the best intentions. But his advisors/agent/circle failed him. Some of you are going to scream "well he's a grown man!". Well yes. But even grown men need support systems and lean on those they trust.
I just think it's a failure from almost every level on this. We will never know truly what he thought. He was already guarded while playing for us, but I am willing to bet he looks back at this moment, and regrets much of how it played out.

What should he have offered him to stay? Flames made a huge offer and he told them to stuff it. Gaudreau knew after playoffs he wasn't coming back. Don't kid yourself.

He’s very tapped into the Blue Jackets. So either Johnny told him during their 1-on-1 or Jarmmo, or another source.
