We will likely see Mason McDonald and Nick Schneider down there soon enough I would think.

The Mavericks were assigned Zach Fischer from Stockton, who will join the team today and released Eric Freschi. No word on where Freschi is going just yet.

They played an intersquad scrimmage last night and Mark Cooper and Jared VanWormer appear to be in mid-season form while some other players Coach John-Scott Dickson expected to shine were quite underwhelming. Camp numbers are higher than they have been the last two years so with guys not stepping up, they make cuts a lot easier for the coaching staff.

Do the Kansas City Mavericks have a set limit number of players that they will accept from the Stockton Heat/Calgary Flames?

I don't believe so. It seems like they're happy to accept any of the help they can get. Especially higher skilled guys. It seems to come down to the discretion of the higher teams.

Rocco Carzo was named the Captain of the Kansas City Mavericks this year. Last years Captain Tyler Elbrecht, signed with division rival Wichita Thunder over the summer. Carzo missed a lot of last season due to injury but was very involved in team functionality and carries a strong leadership presence.

Nick Schneider gets the start in goal for the Mavericks 10th Season Home Opener tonight against the Allen Americans.

Not the smoothest game of hockey to start tonight against the Americans. Lots of slipping and sliding, missed checks and shots going anywhere but to the net. But that didn't stop Rocco Carzo from getting the first goal of the season for the Mavericks just 4 minutes into the game. Schneider got most of his action on the pk in the opening frame but holds his own and stops all Allen shots that come his way in the first 10 minutes. A partial break at 13:12 changes that when he slides out of his crease a little too soon and the puck slips over his shoulder. The Mavericks slip a puck in the net in the last couple of minutes but the post comes off and the referee waves it off. Shots end at 11-7 for the Mavericks after 20 minutes of play.

The Mavs get their period started with another waved off goal. A group of them chipped at a lose puck in front of the net but the whistle beat the puck over the line. The Mavs are able to get their first power play of the night off an Allen tripping call but it is cut short when Rocco Carzo is sent to the box for hooking. As a result, they are short-handed for just over a minute. In their second power play opportunity they find themselves in a 5 on 3 situation and as the first power play expires, Llyodminister native, David Dziurzynski scores the 2nd goal of the night. Then coinciding penalties creates a 4 on 4 situtation where Justin Breton rips a shot off the draw that finds the back of the net. Then Jared VanWormer and Mark Cooper glide down to the zone on a 2 on 1 and VanWormer sets Cooper up for Mavs goal #4! They finish the 2nd period outshooting the Americans 32-16 and leading 4-1.

The third period starts a little dry with no shots until 3 minutes in. About a quarter of the way through the period Jared VanWormer finds himself on the front step and chips the puck just over the Allen goalies glove for Mavs goal #5. Jordan Ernst draws a massive penalty from a hot headed Allen player that gets the other guy to leave the game and a 4 minute powerplay to end off the last 5 minutes of the game. Mavs finished by outshooting the Americans 43-21 and winning 5-1!

^Good to see Schneider play well. Ive always kind of like his game but he couldnt seem to put together good stats in the dub.

Goalies are weird so hopefully Schneider can develop and work his way up a bit.

The Mavericks look to bounce back at home tonight after falling 4-1 last night in Tulsa. Greg Betzold had the lone goal in that game. They host the Indy Fuel with Mason McDonald being reactivated from the IR and getting his first start in net this season.

The game starts out with a quick pace and physical presence. Not a whole lot of shots to start out with but a good range of hits. Indy gets a power play and scores just seconds into it. The Mavericks answer back minutes later with Lloydminster native Darian Dziurzynki's first of the year. Helpers coming from Neal Goff and Rocco Carzo. A delay of game penalty puts the Maverick on the PK for the second time of the night but that doesn't stop Carzo from getting a short-handed goal! The Fuel are unable to answer back so the Mavs keep on going. 2 more goals coming within seconds of each other from Jordan Ernst and Rocco Carzo again. A productive first period puts the Mavs up 4-1 and leading 12-10 in shots.

A similar pace to the second period and a goaltending change for the Fuel is how the 2nd frame starts. Nothing hugely notable through the first 10 minutes other than a penalty from Cliff Watson of KC. Not a very exciting period in comparison to the first but they still get the job done. Jordan Ernst appears to get sliced by a skate and heads back to the bench slowly. Mavs end the period still up 4-1 and leading in shots 28-19.

Indy does not start the 3rd the way they would have probably wanted by giving up an early penalty. The Mavs get just halfway through the power play and are given another. They score within seconds of the 5 on 3 which came from Mark Cooper originally but was later changed to Jared VanWormer. After the last penalty expires, Jordan Klimek gets his first professional goal and puts the Mavericks up 6-2. The other Dziurzynski gets a goal (David) off a breakaway and the Mavs play out the last couple minutes up 7-2. Time runs out and Mavs hold their 5 goal lead. Shots end 41-27. McDonald faces 27 shots and stops 25.

Nick Schnieder got called up to Stockton today. Ben Halford was signed to Kansas City to fill the gap. Halford was around for the start of the season when McDonald was injured but did not get a start for the Mavericks this season yet.

The Mavericks host the Edmonton Oilers affiliate, the Wichita Thunder in their first of two games on the weekend. Mason McDonald got the start between the pipes. Greg Betzold gets the first penalty of the night trying to prevent a Wichita scoring chance. He heads off for holding but it is well worth it. The penalty is killed with ease. Wichita struggles early getting shots on net but are in the zone for a good portion of the opening 10 minutes. Mavs get another penalty trying to stop a breakaway. Mike Panowyk goes to the box for tripping and the Mavericks penalty kill cannot quite put this one out. The Thunder get on the board first just over 11 minutes into the game. The Mavericks push on and look for a goal of their own to tie up the last quarter of the period but are unsuccessful. Shots end 6-4 for Kansas City but the sit down on the board 1-0.

The Mavericks get a couple of quick power play opportunities to start the period but do not find the back of the net. Finally, David Dziurzynski is set up by Mark Cooper and C.J. Eick and they get on the board. Later in the period Thunder Goalie Dylan Wells flies back to his glove side and comes up with a giant save that prevents an almost sure Kansas City goal. The Mavs get fired up from that and Wichita looks for some energy to bounce back. Dyson Stevenson and Neal Goff drop the gloves by the blue line and land some huge punches that send them to the locker room early. At the end of 2 Mavericks lead 19-9 on the shot clock but tied on the scoreboard.

The 3rd plays slow with relatively no action other than a confusing penalty call with 4 minutes to go. After discussion, the Mavs gets a 2 minute power play but cannot produce. They head to overtime where 2 minutes in, Mark Cooper gets a partial break and dekes the goalie out and wins the game for the Mavericks. Not a pretty showing overall but they finished it nonetheless.

Shots ended 29-17 for the Mavericks and tomorrow night, they will be back in action again at home ice to host the Utah Grizzlies.

Some Saturday night hockey brings the Colorado Avalanche affiliate the Utah Grizzlies to town. The Mavs coming off an overtime win look to keep their perfect home record. Mason McDonald getting the start for the second night in a row. He goes into this game with a 2-0 record, 1.48 GAA and a .932 save percentage.

Utah gets an early goal on a rebound that slips five hole. Each team gets a power play but neither produce on their man advantage. The first period flies by and the Mavericks seemed a bit rushed to try and keep up with Utah's pace that is quite visibly quicker than Wichita last night. They get their own opportunity to answer back and it comes in the last couple minutes of the period. C.J. Eick has been buzzing all season and is rewarded with his first goal of the season. Zach Fischer also picks up his first point as a Mav and Mike Panowyk gets and assist on Eick's as well. The Mavs head back to the Grizzlies zone in the closing seconds of the period and gets some quality chances to pull ahead but do not. They end the first period tied and outshooting Utah 11-7.

Both teams get two goals in the second period. The Grizzlies get a power play and follow up with a power play goal 4:35 ino the 2nd. At this point, McDonald had let in 2 goals on 8 shots. A couple minutes later, the 2nd Mavs goal comes from Matt Robertson in a play in tight to the goalie. Lots of pushing and shoving after and the nets comes off. The Utah goalie is visibly upset by this and gives the ref an earful. As a result Jordan Klimek gets into a fight and both contestors go off for 5 minutes. A minute later, Jared VanWormer comes in tight and flips a backhand shot over the goale and the Mavericks pull ahead for the first time in the game. Their lead is cut short 34 seconds later and the Grizzlies score once again. The Mavericks get a late power play and 21 seconds before it expires they are rewarded a 5 on 3. Some decent opportunities for them but nothing comes of it. The first power play expires and they head into the 3rd with 1:31 of their other power play to go. Shots end 25-18 for the Mavericks.

The Mavs are unable to produce on their pp to start the third. They have a relatively good amount of zone time but no change in score. Utah stays strong at their heels and rips a shot at Mason McDonald that he drifts out of his crease to make a save on. The puck slips away and a lucky Utah player fires it home. Mason McDonald jumps to try and get his body on the puck but it is not in time. Utah pulls ahead once again. Greg Betzold get a pass from Jared VanWormer minutes later and rips it top corner to tie it up. Both teams fight for another goal but do not get it.

They head to overtime with a man advantage but do not score on the 4 on 3. Rocco Carzo spends a lot of time on the ice and switches out in the last half of minute where Mark Cooper comes out to win it again! Shot bar down off the crossbar. Great way to end a very close game.

They will be back in action at home November 6th against the Allen Americans.

Corey Durocher and Joey Sides are among two players currently on the injured reserve. Tonight the Mavericks host the Allen Americans in the 3rd and final game in their homestand.

I was not at this game but I followed the radio broadcast.

They did not have the best start through the first period. The Americans have been struggling this season and they did not really take advantage of that off the jump. They were outshot most of the period even though Allen has the highest number of shots against in the league.

In the second period, the Mavs came out with more gas in their tanks. Jared VanWormer opens up the scoring from a feed from Mark Cooper the C.J. Eick gets a short-handed goal. Eick is a tiny guy and head Coach John-Scott Dickson said there was a running joke about him scoring but after getting his first goal on the weekend he is off to the races.

In the third the Mavericks get another two goals courtesy of Jared VanWorme and Matt Robertson. VanWormer finishes the night with 3 points. Unfortunately the Mavs let in a late Allen goal and take away the shutout from McDonald but still leave the night with 2 points and a 5th home win in a row.

The Mavs continue their winning streak to 6 games straight with a pair of wins over the Allen Americans over the weekend.

On both Friday and Saturday they won 5-3. Mason McDonald started on Friday and Ben Halford started on Saturday.

Today it was announced that Justin Breton was traded to the Maine Mariners in a future considerations deal. He was a regular for the Mavericks last season but has only appeared in 4 games this season. The Mavericks have a lot of forward depth this year so they definitely have room to clear up the space a little bit.

The Mavericks hosted the Wichita Thunder this morning for a 10:35 a.m. kids game. Ben Halford started in net and the Mavericks earned their 7th straight win by a score of 5-3. They now sit #5 in the League overall and #1 in the Mountain Division. As of today, they have the 2nd best winning percentage in the league at .064. The teams sitting higher in the division have similar records but just have more games played therefore more points. After this win, the Mavericks have secured their best season start in team history.
