Spiritbox have dropped a new three song EP yesterday.

it's a bit different, but I'm digging it. They remain one of the more exciting metal bands out there.

That's pretty catchy. That guy needs to cut down on the pick scrapes though as he puts it in too many of their songs.

What are your thoughts on Zakk Wylde's use of pinch harmonics?

Ha ha. For sure but I really don't listen to a lot of Black Label Society. I find he was best in the first two Ozzy albums he did and after that his style kinds of runs its course. He's a really good guitarist but there's not enough variance in his sound for me. I don't mind this song but it's really not a lot different than what he was doing with Ozzy.

Lacuna Coil have completely re-recorded their "Comalies" album. First taste:

looking forward to the full thing, especially "Swamped" and "Heaven's a Lie". This kind of thing always has some boom-or-bust potential though.

I work with the dad of one of the band members of the opening act Arrival of Autumn. That made me feel really old. ####.

Arrival of Autumn were really great i thought. Same with Light the Torch. And then of course there’s Avatar. Top notch across the board. Great show all around

This isn't really metal but these are Lars Ulrich's sons.

Also not really 'metal' but Metallica closed up day one of Lollapalooza in Chicago last night, in fabulous form.
James Hetfield may be the coolest guy on the planet, and still kicks ass after 40 years. Definitely more of a Stranger Things crowd than Metallica family, but we had such a good time last night. Kinda forgot how much fun outdoor festivals are.

I hope you're referring to the Lollapalooza event itself and not Metallica

They can still play for sure. James voice isn't what it once was but it's difficult for a lot of metal singers (especially those doing harsh vocals) to age gracefully.

And in his case he damaged his vocal cords recording the cover of So What! and needed surgery. In order to keep being able to sing he had to take vocal lessons to learn how to use them properly. That's why you'll see a lot of backstage footage of him warming up his voice.

Except for Chuck Billy, who still sounds like the perfect spawn of Satan even after battling lung cancer

Yeah some singers take really good care of their vocal cords or are just straight up freaks. Mikael Akerfeldt is 48 so not ancient by any means but I was surprised by how good his clean and death metal growls were live when I saw Opeth with Mastodon earlier this year. He sounded like he just got out of the studio after recording Blackwater Park. One of the better sounding live singers I have heard in a long time.

The Halo Effect's debut album dropped yesterday and I like it a lot. Nothing groundbreaking, but a really solid effort that simultaneously sounds like something that could have dropped after "Clayman", but also sounds fresh and modern at the same time. Really like Mikael Stanne's vocals on this one too.

Steve Grimmett, lead singer of Grim Reaper, has died at 62.

Not a super well-known band, but Grimmett had a great metal voice. And apparently a healthy sense of humour, since Grim Reaper is probably best know as a favourite target for Beavis and Butthead:

I've been absolutely loving this release

It's got this interesting fusion of jazz and black metal.
Really fantastic, probably my favourite release of 2022 so far.
