Even if MLB would let him back, I doubt the US government ever will

Shohei Ohtani’s Dodgers deal prompts California controller to ask Congress to cap deferred payments
Quote:
Cohen made the request four weeks after the two-way star and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a record $700 million, 10-year contract that contains $680 million in deferred payments due from 2034-43. If Ohtani is not living in California at the time he receives the deferred money, he potentially could avoid what currently is the state’s 13.3% income tax and 1.1% payroll tax for State Disability Insurance.

That is ####ing insane and I can't wait to see that blowup for the cheaters. That's $350000 an inning based on a 55IP average for a closer. And he's just 2 years removed from an atrocious season.

Yeah I'm ok with it blowing up in their faces but on paper they now have Abreu, Pressly and Hader as their 7-8-9 inning guys and that is straight up nasty....on paper. We'll see I guess.

This has to be one of the weakest HOF classes ever. Beltre, meh. Longevity came into to play on that one. Helton can thank Larry Walker for his inclusion. And Mauer being a first ballot? Woof.

Yikes. Nobody can be voted in on any given year right?

Beltre meh? He's one of the best half-dozen or so 3Bs ever. .286 avg, 3000 hits, 477 HR, 5 gold gloves, most RBIs by any 3B.
3B is also the most unrepresented position in the HOF.

This isn't good for the AL east most likely.
The Orioles might be on the verge of becoming the 2017-2023 Astros.
I mean, they already won 100+ games like the Astros did in 2017, but now they should be able to keep the core around and add to it if they want/need to.

That's a huge commitment, but he's a very talented player. If he progresses to play like he did this past season and stays relatively healthy it could be s steel. If he regressed like Vladdy has the past 2 seasons might be averagish type value. If he Rendon's...disaster. But more likely it will be towards the upside.

He has good timing, being available like that just prior to a referendum on public funding for a new stadium.
Seriously though, he's a great player and probably deserves the contract.

Not sure I get why you'd compare him to Rendon. Rendon was 29 years old when he signed his contract with LAA, Witt Jr isn't even 24 yet.

I'm a huge fan of Witt. I think he's the ideal 5 tool player and he's quite young still. Lock him up and hope to build around him. He'll be full value of that contract for all 11 years, but you gotta give him some support. This is what I worry about for KC...attracting free agents is a tough sell. Gonna have to build through the draft/development route and then maybe get a key FA or two near the end of the build.
But Witt is the real deal. Great player to commit to if you're going to hand out some money.

I get that, it's more a guy who was productive becomes quite injury prone and is never available. This is an 11 year deal...if he's injured at 30...he's collecting money for 4 years. So that's not good for teams paying a salary. I can remember a lot of 8 year deals for guys around this age.
Admit that Rendon has sort of proven that baseball was a job to him and one he didn't really love. Witt being from a baseball family likely is a bit different.
