That sucks. The Buzzcocks were legends and influenced a ton of great bands. I’m glad I got to see them when they played Republik a few years ago.

Back in my early 20s, the Buzzcocks were one of my punk music mainstays...along with the Vibrators and the Ramones. Much preferred them over those overrated Sex Pistols.

I always looked at the Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks as a divergence on the tree of music evolution.

The Sex Pistols were not great musicians, but they had the energy and image. And to be fair, they had some good hooks. They would go on to influence American punk, hardcore, metal, thrash, ska punk and glam rock.

The Buzzcocks were less about image and more about composing. To me, they were the branch that evolved into new wave, alternative, emo "indie", and pop rock.

I don't think any of the punk bands had what you would call great musicians. The philosophy in the NYC punk scene - whether Ramones or Television - was that it didn't matter. In the UK punk scene you weren't supposed to know how to play. In Sid Vicious's case, the latter was certainly true:

- Sid Vicious: "Hey Lemmy [Kilmister], guess what! I’m in The Pistols." - Lemmy: "What do you mean?"
- Sid Vicious: "I’m the bass player in the Pistols. It’s great, innit?"
- Lemmy: "You can’t play bass, Sid."
- Sid Vicious: "Yeah, yeah, I know, but I’m in the f****** Pistols!"

[Steve] Jones: “ When Sid replaced Glenn [Matlock] the music went out the window."

It's interesting to know that Pete Shelley was the co-promoter for the Pistols' first gig in Manchester. Shelley was only 21 at the time. Shelley was a great lyricist and a master of the three-minute pop song. I especially like his solo work like Homosapien and Telephone Operator.
