Blues sign Patrick Maroon (1 yr, $1.75 mil)
https://theathletic.com/424314/2018/...ometown-blues/
Quote:
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong is staying busy this summer. After last week’s trade for Ryan O’Reilly and the signings of Tyler Bozak and David Perron, Armstrong could add another piece as soon as Sunday.
Free-agent forward Pat Maroon, a native St. Louisan, is expected to sign a contract with his hometown team, the Blues, a source has told The Athletic.
Terms of the deal aren’t yet known.
The Blues had put a full-court press on Maroon in recent days, with Armstrong meeting him in person in St. Louis to go over his potential role and current players such as captain Alex Pietrangelo calling to encourage him to join the club.

Good for him. Gets to be close to his (ex)wife and kid.

I love the Neal signing but would have liked to add Maroon too. I think if we didn't have Brouwer, we would have got him.
Outside of hockey, I really like this and I'm happy it worked out for him.

Armstrong has been killing this offseason. Adding O'Reilly, Bozak, Perron and Maroon gives their forward corps a completely new look.

Ryan O’Reilly, Tyler Bozak, David Perron AND Patrick Maroon?
I don't even think any of the contracts look too bad.
Will be interesting to see how they do.
Now they'll be a lot less dependent on the Schwartz, Tarasenko and Schenn line.

Their entire season comes down to Jake Allen. He was pretty awful as the starter last year and Hutton's strong season as backup gave them a fighting chance until the end. Now they have Chad Johnson as backup who didn't show so well in Buffalo. If Allen has another year like the last one, the Blues aren't going anywhere.

True.
Reminds me of Calgary. They added a lot of solid forward depth, now the biggest question is goaltending.
I would say Smith is better than Allen, but he's also probably more injury prone.
I guess we'll see.

Glad to see he didn't end up in Calgary. Giant plug and we still have enough of those.

They have 5 M of Cap space before Maroon and top-4 D-man Edmundston filed for arbitration.

I still think we dodged a bullet with Neal over Maroon, I'm highly skeptical of his usefulness on the ice versus what I anticipate hes asking for in terms of cash.
Hes probably a much better fit in St. Louis than he would have been here.
Over there hes way down the depth chart which likely puts him in a better position to succeed.
It really depends on the contract though, but I also agree, the Blues have had a killer off-season and the Central is just getting tighter and tighter.
That being said, I imagine when he shows up in St Louis they're going to basically do this:

definitely wasn't a guy i was hoping the flames would sign, but if he did i definitely would have been hoping i was wrong... glad he was able to sign with STL to be closer to his kid; seemed like he put his signing off so he was able to let things shake out... my guess is that he left money on the table to do so.
Cap will be interesting next year too, as i believe parayko (sp?) is coming up soon and he is going to cash in

If there wasn't a salary cap he's a good add to any team. Only knock on him will be how much he ends up getting overpaid

That would be a great contract, but I dont see that. If that were the case we likely could also have signed him.
Hes 30 years old coming off a $2M per year contract and a career year.
Hes likely going to want no less than 4 years and a more significant raise than just half a mil.

Maybe, but the Blues know Maroon wants to play in St. Louis to be close to his kid. They shouldn't have to overpay and anything over $2.5/yr over 2 years is an overpay imo.

Everyone spent all season talking about Maroon having no brain for the game, dumb decision maker, etc and in free agency everyone's lined up to fellate him like he was the hot ticket. Get your #### together CP

O'Reilly is very good, Perron fine, the rest is just OK.
I don't think they've moved the needle all that much.
Reminds me of when Sutter collected 20 goal scorers.
