I'd say you were poorly assessing risk. The larger risk in that scenario is them jaywalking and getting hit by a car.

The scariest thing to have happened to me when I was going door to door (remember I was 12) was this man telling me he was interested in buying but was busy in the backyard, and asked if I wouldn't mind pitching him there. I went around to the backyard and nobody was there. The back door to the house was opened so I approached the door and yelled hello. I heard the man's voice responding from the basement asking me to come down the stairs and to talk to him there. That was when I hightailed it out of there. If someone has bad intentions, I don't think they will try to snatch a child in broad daylight from the front door but I think they would try to inveigle the child to go somewhere less visible or to come back later.
