Thats a shame, a Salah-less draw there would have been a huge result for Egypt.

Jeez check out that offside call around 1:10. Terrible lol.

Draw would have been nice for Egypt, but qualification from the group was always about beating Russia and Saudi Arabia. Best to make sure Salah is fully fit to go for those two matches.

I think Egypt can take the Saudis, but I'm changing my tune on Russia, they dont look like a bunch of chumps anymore.

If they snag a win and a draw and the Russians stumble against Uruguay....they're in with a shout still, but a draw here would have been a huge point for them.

Egypt were tactically solid today, add Salah's gamebreaking ability and I think they'll beat Russia. Russia were definitely better than expected, while the Saudis were even worse than expected.

Is that possible? Again, I shudder at the prospect of a 48 team World Cup when a team this bad qualified.

The Saudis were way worse than expected. I think the occasion of the opening game got to them. That defending was shocking.

What scares me the most is how many more Asian teams there's going to be. Right now Asia has 4.5 spots and that includes:

Australia
Korea
Japan
Saudi Arabia
Syria

In the new format, they will have 8 and with Oceania getting a guaranteed spot, I could see Australia moving back there.

So if you went by the 2018 qualifiers, the next four best teams were:

Qatar (98th world ranking)
Uzbekistan (95)
Iran (37)
United Arab Emirates (77)

By comparison, Saudi Arabia is currently ranked 67.

Well not that the FIFA rankings mean anything (did everyone know Switzerland is currently ranked #6? Yeah....), but the Saudis were ranked ahead of Russia. So maybe you don't expect them to beat Russia, but they looked like Canada could work them over pretty good.

The FIFA rankings are objectively garbage but if used loosely they're an okay indicator at times. Just dont swear by them and use some judgement.

The Swiss at 6 isnt outrageous, they maybe shouldnt be in the top 10 but they had a solid qualifying campaign and I dont think any team really wants to go up against them.

That Uruguay/Egypt finish reminds me of all the great and terrible things about soccer.

Great goal and exciting finish to the game, but so much dramatic flopping it borders on unwatchable at times. Case in point - 4' into injury time and Suarez is writhing and flopping around on the ground after a light touch, just to kill time and draw a yellow. You'd think he'd been shot.

Oh God....I'm just imagining the World Cup games in Canada with Riders fans. We're going to be the laughing stock of the World.

England: "We beat the hell out of people for fun!"
Canada Sask: "We wear beer boxes and watermelons on our heads."

I dont know which is worse. I'd probably rather get beaten up.

That's an interesting way to deal with what's likely a concussion.
