Whatever gets paid for Karlsson will be way too much for the return. Guaranteed. This is the definition of mortgaging the future to win now.

Lol I just read this on HF Sens.

I can't imagine Ottawa being dead set on Bobby Ryan being part of a Karlsson trade. Could you imagine sabotaging the value being returned on the best player in the history of your franchise just so the owner could get out of some money?
Eugene Melnyk? Yes, yes I can.

I don't think you offer up a king's ransom for this guy. He has crazy good instincts and skills on offense, but playing actual defense is not a strong suit

No way we can afford to renew him and to be honest whoever signs him to a 7-8 year extension at 10+ million is going to regret it sooner than later. He's still elite but not for another decade.

Giordano-Hamilton
Brodie - Karlsson
Kulak - Stone

Our powerplay units would definitely see an improvement
But surely Hamonic is still worth a 1st and two 2nds? Right?

I hear he's a great guy, probably worth more now.

Right?

I can't believe that Karlsson is available.

Seriously what are they thinking?

Sounds like a foregone conclusion he won't re-sign. So why wouldn't they trade him?

As crazy as it sounds I wouldn't be totally against taking on Ryan as part of a 3 way deal if the other team retained 3.5Mil. He never worked out in the East but he seemed to be a lot better in the Pacific. It would be a gamble but if we don't have to give up anything of value it might pay off. The other team would just be avoiding a buyout as the alternative. If they buy him out they have 4 years of 3.5Mil (the same as retaining) but then they don't have 4 years of 1.8Mil after that. I'm aware Burke doesn't/didn't like him.

McJesus and Karlsson eating a quarter of their cap. Not to mention Looch chomping good on it as well.
Wouldn’t that be great. Nugent-Hopkins + Nurse + 2018 1st + 2019 1st ++.

Ottawa wins the lottery with Edm 1st, wins lottery with their own for 2nd, drafts Dahlin and Zadina. Drafts top 5 next year with Edm 2019. Nurse goes on to win a Norris in the future.

Oilers stay in cap hell. Karlsson slowly goes downhill. Ryan stays downhill. They still don’t make the playoffs again. Karlsson goes on to request a trade and the Oilers recoup two 2nds and a 3rd.

This is a guy you build around, how did they let the relationship sour so much?

I would be livid as a Sens fan. You don't trade a player like this. You'll never get a fair return IMO.

I assume things went south when Melnyk gave up his legal pursuit of Matt Cooke.

Kidding.

If I’m guessing, Doug Wilson will land him. This is exactly the situation where he steps in and steals players. And Karlsson has good chance of resigning in San Jose.

curious whether there isn't any bad blood?

the tone of the article suggests there relationship is broken and its more than Karlsson looking for a payday?

Calgary would have to gut their team to afford him, which is pretty much defeating the purpose of making the trade in the first place - making a deep run into the playoffs.

big question with Ottawa is whether the go scorched earth or not (between now and the draft i mean)

Watching him tonight just to see how he's playing these days.

Made a goal saving stop on the goal line behind Condon earlier.

Then looked totally disinterested on the most recent goal by Anisimov. Puck came right to his area at the side of the net. Didn't take the puck. Didn't take the man. Easy tap in for Anisimov.

hard to say if he's just not putting in his "A" effort for the Sens any longer, or if he's just not playing that well right now period.

Lightning most logical and seriously doubt the Sens are coupling Ryan without giving some on the picks and prospect side.

Wayne Gretzky did not command as much as they are suggesting.

You can do a lot with McDavid, Karlsson and a goalie.

Sure, they can add Carey Price after Karlsson.

I’m not advocating this suggestion, but would Flames fans do a deal around Gaudreau for Karlsson (with new contract already agreed on)?

They’re both elite, but Karlsson plays the more impactful position, so I’d explore the possibilities...
