Funny how so many Oiler fans think we're the ones with the horseshoes when they have all those #1 draft picks

Agree about injuries. Nobody should wish those,
But the implication is the starting goalie decision
Agree or disagree, perhaps because it takes the (arguably) wrong (arguably GM / loyalty/ whatever based) decision out of the coach’s hands (and forces him to accept the statistically getter goalie as starter, independent of ego / contract / whatever else situations)
I think Smith is better than his recent stats imply, but surely you can’t fault the end result if thinking Rittich may be the better goalie, just the means.

Was thinking the same thing as it happened. I was very happy to see Hakstol keeping Giroux and Voracek on the bench and put Konecny and Couturier on the ice. What kind of coaching is that, really? Does he not know that a whole lot of OT's are decided on the first shift?

Well, that was another fun game.
Monahan could have scored like 5 goals. I'm glad he was able to make up for missing his man on the 3rd Philly goal by potting a couple. He looks more engaged this year and I hope he scores 40 (only 2nd line center totals ).
Johnny was amazing all game and controlled the game. The only goal I put on Smith is the 4th one, as the other 3 were just regular goals with broken coverage or individual efforts from the Flyers.
Congrats to Andersson for scoring his first. Hopefully he's on the PP soon can continue his great play.

Seriously, came in here to read the thread after waking up early to watch the game, all excited and happy after this ridiculous win, end up just frustrated and angry at the hate talk, take it to a circle jerk thread where you guys can go after Smith all you want.
Enjoy a freakin win people.

Not too shabby!

That was a pretty dangerous game for the Flames. It was sloppy, our starter was exposed yet again, and we allowed one of the worst teams in the NHL to dictate the play for the better part of two periods. The comeback win was really nice, but this is a win that could go either way.
They could be introspective and know this was a game for them to learn from. The coaching staff can recognize that some players get way more opportunity that they deserve, and others should be relied upon more. The players can look at the film and wince along with the rest of as the breakdowns were ugly, ugly, ugly. They can learn from this and tighten things up again, getting on another role and solidifying their position in the standings.
They could go the other way and revel in this massive come from behind win, believing they have the ability to flip the switch and dominate at will. I hope they don't do that. They need to work harder, maintain better gap control, and keep pucks off our net, especially when Smith is net. But the danger is there they will think this was a display of their invincibility. I hope Peters and company don't give them that chance.
On to the 1,000 pound gorilla in the room, the Flames need a goaltender. David Rittich is a fine backup, but unless he steps up and the team plays their game where they can provide offense, another tender is likely a requirement. That may not be ultimately fair to Rittich, as he has provided some really solid goaltending during his last few losses, but a tandem is required, even if it is a veteran to split the games. The Smith conversation will be held for another thread.
It was really nice to see the comeback, but this coupled with the Oilers game, should be a wake up call for the team to refocus a bit.

Flames win! This team still sucks, every player needs to score every game or they suck!
Maybe Neal made a deal with the devil, he won't score 20 goals if his team wins the cup....

I bet Neal finishes the season with under 10 goals, then absolutely turns on the jets as soon as the playoffs start and it'll be like we gained another top 6 sniper.

Oh my god.
Just because his stats aren't impressive this year doesn't mean he isn't a whipping boy and that people aren't biased against him. Like it's been pointed out many times he's had games where he's fully deserving to be ragged on but he's also had games where he hasn't. The guy gets a shutout and people still bitch about something. Him and Rittich let in identical goals and somehow Rittich had no chance but Smith should have had it. That's bias.
But if you wan't to live in your own little dreamworld where everything is his fault even when he doesn't play then whatever.

what a game, what a comeback! Extremely fun team this year. I wish Anaheim would just crash and burn at some point, but what can you do. Very happy for Rasmus, about time he got rewarded.
too bad this thread got derailed.

Enjoyed the game - a true sine wave of emotions -- great comeback!
Loved the ATL. (Thanks, as always Gaskal, for your "second job"!)
Really, really, really, really tired of the horsecrap arguments about 'tenders in the PGT, especially after a win. This is why we can't have nice things. Negative Nellies gotta be...well, negative. Not only was the glass half-full, it's now spilled over the entire table. Sheesh.
Suggestion: make a "Smith is No Good, Rittich is our Saviour" thread and argue in there, and leave the PGT to actual comments about the game just played. Rather like the E=NG threads. The constant sniping is turning CP's PGTs into a garbage heap, sad to say.
Edit: for the record, mostly I come looking for the ATL, get a sense of others' takes, post a bit and leave, now.

Got up a half an hour early only to read the ATL report. Totally worth it. Out of thanks, Gaskal!

All the salty Coiler comments about horseshoes crack me up. It's not like the Flyers scored three own goals. The Flames, you know, had to proactively put the puck into the net of a team of professional hockey players trying to stop them. Nothing lucky about it, unlike say Edmonton benefitting from the tying goal being called off last game.
