They aren't really comparable players. I wouldn't be shocked if Chabot wins a Norris during this contract

This is probably the best take in this thread. The senators are taking a real risk, which is somewhat mitigated by the fact that they have cap space to play with.

Sens overpay the player now while they don't need the cap space. In the hopes the cap goes up and player progression improves, thereby making the contract a steal when the senators are actually competitive.

It only become a great deal in 3-4 years if Chabot becomes an All-Star d-man

Less than 50% chance. or the Cap goes up to at least 100M.

Right now that would make him the 5th highest paid d-man in the league.

If the cap stays the same then there is more than 50% chance that it is a bad to really bad deal.

Chabot is way better than Hanifin. Sens wouldn't make that swap even if Calgary added Bennett and 1st rounder.

Chabot is a guy who will be in the Norris conversation soon imo. Dorion acted wisely in locking this kid up now.

I think there is a greater-than 50% chance that Chabot is an All Star this year. (That is to say, he will probably play in the ASG. Who else would Ottawa send?) He is 22-years-old, and was the tenth-highest scoring defenseman in the NHL in his second season. He was his team's #3 highest scoring player, and the top two are playing elsewhere this year.

Of course, there is a risk with this contract, but I think it is a calculated one, and one that the Senators should take.

Right, but this contract still helps to make Hanifin's deal look like a bargain. Hanifin is the same age as Chabot.

But is he $3M better? That, I suppose is the question. He has had one really good and one great season. Hanifin has had more experience at the same age, so there's more of a sense of what he is I suppose. But he has had regularly good seasons without a lot of PP or top pairing time.

Hanifin didn’t sign for 8 years. In fact, Chabot’s deal will extend for 4 years after Hanifin is slated to be UFA so the comparison is a tricky one. Eight million during those 4 years after the new TV deal could be a great bargain.

Sens actually paid someone. Good to see. This contract has the chance to be a steal fairly soon if Charity keeps up his trajectory and play from last year

This is a great deal.

There is always risk when you sign a player long term, this is no different.

D-men with Chabot's skills seldom regress when they are young.

It is very unlikely they won't get good value from this.

It also locks him up for all of his prime years.

Much less risk than signing a pending UFA for 8 years when he's 28.

Chabot is definitely $3M better than Hanifin. You could probably put an extra digit somewhere around the 3 or the M or the $ and Chabot would still be worth the extra digit where ever it may lie.

Of course this is a gamble, but it is a good one to take in this environment of that 2nd contract essentially disappearing and the young stars getting paid right out of their ELCs. If not Chabot, who else? There aren't many better offensive defencemen in the NHL period.

You always worry that he will regress like a Phaneuf. Injuries can happen. There are always lots of things that can come up over an 8 year period.

However, this is as good of a gamble as there is for a young defencemen. Ekblad hasn't (imo) lived up to his 7.5 deal - though you might blame that on his concussion issues in the past. Chabot is easily in that same conversation as Ekblad was. Heck, Calgary signed Phaneuf for 6.5 at a time with a much lower salary cap. This was a good signing - 8 years are always a gamble, but this was a good bet.

You think he's $13M better? Or $30M better? Ok.

Chabot is going to be an All Star before Andersson, Kylington and Valimaki?

Without Brodie and Gio hogging ice time Hanifin would have at least 55 pts and the Flames would have finished ahead of Ottawa.

Hanifin had 29 es pts Chabot 39

Most Chabot's points were meaningless in meaningless games.

Does your weird brain just automatically go into contrarian mode and spew utter nonsense when you see general consensus of opinion? Do you get a kick out of this? What the hell is the matter with you? You're out to lunch almost every single time in every hockey thread. Your ridiculous opinions and the crud logic you use to back them up is just silly and bizarre. May god have mercy on your soul.

How are they not comparable players? Both are 2015 1st round picks and Dmen. Chabot has had much more offensive success but not convinced that is worth $3M more on the aav?

Where do you come up with such nonsense?

Honestly, I'm legit curious. It's fascinating the amount of crap you throw at a wall hoping it sticks.
