Flames Seven Things to Watch for this Season

As if we need any more reasons to look forward to the upcoming season here are seven Calgary Flames milestones that are within reach this year. It's always fun to contextualize players within the pantheon of Flames greats. This season presents itself as one where many Flames have a chance to write themselves into the teams history book.
  1. Sean Monahan (172) is only 41 goals from tying Al MacInnis (213) and becoming 7th in all time for goals as a Calgary Flame. If 8 of those are game winners he will tie Nieuwendyk and become 3rd in that category.
  2. Johnny Gaudreau (387) is only 65 points from tying Eric Vail ( 452) and becoming 9th in all time points as a Flame. With a similar campaign as last season he is bound to pass Nieuwendyk in assists this season as well.
  3. Mark Giordano (542) is 53 points from tying Gary Roberts (505) and becoming 8th all time in points as a Calgary Flame. He is another 24 points after that from catching Chouinard who is 7th.
  4. David Rittich (67) is only 52 games played from tying Pat Riggin (109) and becoming 9th in games played as a Flames goalie. With 27 wins ( the same as last season) he will tie Rick Wamsley who is 8th in that category.
  5. Bill Peters (50) is 38 wins from tying Mike Keenan (88) and becoming 9th all time in games won as a Calgary coach. It will probably take a handful of playoff wins for him to catch Darryl Sutter (107).
  6. T.J. Brodie (570) is only 47 games played from tying Gary Suter (617) and becoming 9th all time in games played as a Flame. Backlund who is 8th won’t pass Peplinski (7th) unless the Flames make it to the second round.
  7. Mikael Backlund (11) is 2 short handed goals from tying Jarome Iginla (13) and becoming 3rd all time as a Flame. It is one of the few records that Iginla does not hold for the Flames. Theoren Fleury amazingly has 28.
