Yes, both Kerr and Millions did their first PBP broadcasts on Flames PPV's before they each got a shot at the full-time Sportsnet gig. I still feel spoiled with Ball and Hrudey every time I think back on this period of darkness.
Charlie Simmer as the colour commentator was brutal as well.
He would start 90% of anything he said with "And again...."
He would finish 90% of anything he said with "... at that point."

Charlie seems like a great guy but he added absolutely nothing to the broadcast. He never offered much in the way of analysis despite a very successful NHL career. So many replays he would just... say out loud what was happening on the screen. "And again, the shot comes in, and the goalie makes the stop." Yes, thank you Charlie, we already have a play-by-play guy. Hrudey offers more insight in a period than Charlie did in half a season.

Kerr and Simmer, while I like them both otherwise, was a brutal broadcast team. Just so boring to listen too and like was mentioned, Simmer rarely added anything. He was just calling the play by play except on replays
I never had a problem with Roger Millions but Ryan Leslie is just in another league.

The same thing happened exactly one month ago with the Oilers-Canucks game. This is an all canadian match up and there is no reason that this is a regional game.
That's twice!

What is it with Sportsnet when it comes to televising Penn State teams vs. the Alberta teams? The Flames at Penguins game is regional even though it's on a Sat., just like when they played in Philly. The Oilers had both of their games in Penn State nationally televised such as the Oilers-Pens 3 days ago! Thanks for nothing Sportsnet. Terrible programming, the Red Wings-Flyers game that the rest of Canada gets is nothing special.
For the home games in AB, the Flyers-Flames game was national and so was the Pens-Oilers.
The past month, Sportsnet has messed itself up with its NHL coverage. Tonight's Flames-Ducks should be upgraded because it is a Wednesday and is the better game than the meaningless Senators-Rangers game. The Oilers at Knights national game this past Monday when it should have shown the Oilers at Knights game eight days earlier on a Sunday night, one of its marquee nights. Another Monday mishap was the Capitals at Panthers game was not on Sportsnet East, only the Pacific and West channels. The East channel was showing the Blue Jays game, even though it was on SN1.

Honestly, there’s much bigger things to worry about. We get to watch 82 games a year plus playoffs and have two top tier commentators (when Kelly is paired with Rick). Ryan Leslie is also fantastic and I’m not even hating Francis and Sutter at intermission. The only thing I could do without (but really don’t even care that much about) is Don Cherry/Hometown Hockey.

I'd settle for proper HD video and sound quality

As a kid I remember watching the Flames on channels 2&7! I cant rightly remember how many games a year were broadcast.
Now I'm paying for center ice (I live in victoria). Really costly considering I only watch Flames games for the most part. Actually this may be the only year it's been worth the cost!
Sure would have been better for Canadian fans if that big contract would have been split between the networks. Competing for viewers would have probably resulted in less blackouts and a better overall production!
We live north of Vancouver and also purchase Centre Ice. We primarily only watch Flames games. The occasional game is still not available on any channel. That's frustrating enough but it's also hard to determine which channel listed will also actually carry the game. As such, whenever possible, we always check to see that the game is actually broadcast/being recorded on the selected channel.
* We also have all the Sportsnet and TSN channels.
If TSN had the league rights you can bet he and Hrudey would be on the payroll although probably not calling Flames games as Ken King has a thing for Rogers. Doubtful anyone in the Oilers crew makes the cut as TSN has standards.

Has Sportsnet confirmed who the broadcast crew is for the Flames in round one? I'm assuming Hrudey will be in Toronto for the playoffs, but was hoping Rick Ball would be the PBP guy. Guessing he'd be paired with Debrusk or something.
Is it just me or does it sound like the play is coming from the bottom of a tin can on the end of a 20 ft string. My wife noticed the poor sound quality the other night and she rarely pays attention to games.

Ya, noticed that on the last Flames game. Felt like arena & rink sound was coming in on one audit channel only (right) and muffled and quiet. Don't worry, the announcers were still full blast.
