Flames host Capitals in matchup of retooled playoff contenders

"It's incredible to watch young players grow," coach Spencer Carbery said. "(Ivan Miroshnichenko) -- in English -- is yelling things to players on the ice. You see it as a coach, and you're just smiling because you can feel the investment, and how bad they want to win, how they want to do the right things."

Flames host the Capitals after Backlund's 2-goal game

LAST 10 GAMES: Flames: 6-4-0, averaging 3.6 goals, 6.2 assists, 4.8 penalties and 12.7 penalty minutes while giving up 3.6 goals per game.

Capitals: 6-4-0, averaging 3.2 goals, five assists, 3.4 penalties and 8.1 penalty minutes while giving up three goals per game.

Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman are the pillars of the Calgary Flames right now

There has been a lot of ups and downs over the last couple seasons for the Calgary Flames. A divide between the roster and head coach. A general manager leaving behind a mess. Rumoured trade requests from veteran players. Hiring of a new coach and general manager. Trades. It’s been absolutely insane for the players inside that dressing room.

However, there has been one thing that has been constant. And that’s the play of Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman. These two veteran players give the fans in this city everything they have year in, year out.

Raise your hands if you thought this late into the season that Dylan Strome would be leading the Caps in points and goals.

If the Capitals get 2 points here they jump over Detroit for the 2nd Wild Card spot, and pull within 1 point of Philly with a game to give. So this should be a pretty motivated team here tonight. With how off Ovechkin has been its a bit surprising they're still in the playoff chase.

15 games left in the season, I don't think wins or losses move the Flames much up or down the standings.

When we lived in Washington DC, I took my son to his very first NHL game there. Calgary Flames vs. Washington Capitals in 2018. Today, I'm taking him to his very first game at the 'dome. He has been counting down the days now for the last week.

If memory serves me correctly, the Flames won that game 6 years ago 5-2, with 2 goals from Backlund. Hopefully we get an equally strong showing tonight from the good guys.

Worried about Wilson trying to get at Pospisil.

Let's leave this game healthy.

I think they're likely 10th overall best with Ottawa skidding.

But there are about 5 teams in that .515 to .550 range so a lot is up in the air between 10 and 14.

Beating Washington tonight makes it even tighter.

Washington has a pretty crappy team, I think they are overachieving this year. A Wolf start and a good effort should net a win tonight.

Plan is for Markstrom to skate a few more times this week and hopefully be back Saturday vs. Vancouver.

Is Miromanov the mirror man? I think I might have just got that inference after I looked at his spelling a little more.

Hoping for 0 goals for Ovechkin and a -3. and someone dropping the Ukrainian flag everytime he is on the ice for a goal against.

With our Russian influx, maybe Ovie will come here next few years, and break the goal record as a Flame.
