On a 6 year contract he is . Thats the ideal length for the Flames. That being said I fully expect an 8 x 8.25 if he resigns long term . Tre likes to get low aav when possible.

Same, if the Flames choose to stay "status quo" and only mess around with 4th liners. (i.e. like last off-season)
Flames are likely in the same spot next season
i.e. in the playoff race right till the end of the season.

If his camp push for a 9m x 6 year term
Flames need to move the player.....

In a flat cap situation Flames can not be signing players to terrible contracts.
Which they will regret in 2 to 4 year timeframe.
Gaudreau is not a guy that can excel in the playoffs.
Trade the asset and use the cap elsewhere.

Seriously on who? Mark Stone didn't wanna sign here. You wanna give 7m to hall instead ? If gaudreau wants to be here I think 9m 6 years is reasonable given the player gaudreau is . You made it clear you disagree but offer no comparable contracts no alternative players or acquisitions. So your plan is what? To tank? How oilers of you.

Look at the league, there are 17 players with $9m or more
That contract would pay him more than Leon Draisait ($8.5m)
Cap space is a huge tool for any team....
Guadreau makes $6.75M, no chance he gets $9.0m in his next contract

Draisaitl was an rfa , hadn't produced without McDavid and the cap was at 75m so he actually was getting paid a larger percentage of the cap than gaudreau would at 9m today. Also wanna guess what a contact would look like if Drai was Ufa after next season? Thats a bad example . Like I said though...if its 8 years its likely closer to 8m

Gaudreau is the 11th highest scoring player since he entered the league and even if you just go back to 2018/2019 he is the 16th highest scoring player in the league. I think people here forget how good he is. If Gaudreau goes UFA, a team will pay him 9 million per for 5 years easy.

That's great another team can pay him 9M a year when he's 33 years old. I hope its not the Flames.

First Line Centre

I took a look at the right wing UFAs available this coming offseason and it’s pretty unimpressive. There are a couple veteran centres that are right-handed shots that might be ready to shift to the wing but paying big for UFAs is rarely a good move for Calgary - especially because with means paying too much for too long to get them to sign in Calgary. Maybe the flames could make a trade for one but I’m just not sure how many quality right-handed forwards are available.
It’s difficult to do of course but the smart signings come when teams find players ready to burst out given more opportunity. The flames have done this successfully in the past with players like Rene Bourque/Curtis Glencross. But have also missed with players like Czarnick. Anyone have any insight/suggestions for players of that type that are close to breaking through but need more opportunity that anyone can think of? It’s especially more difficult to get these types of players this year because those are the types that Seattle will be targeting in the expansion draft.
It could even be a player like Phillips I suppose but I’m not confident he is ready to contribute in the top six.

I don't disagree if they can trade him for something decent but 9 million isn't that crazy of a number for him. UFA contracts are pretty much always the worst ones but I do think Gaudreau has a decent chance of staying productive as his play style doesn't rely on crazy speed or heavy play though.

1M per 10 points is always my going rate for players
I would give Gaudreau 8 because I think he can easily be in that range...above that though gets risky

Presuming they draft Power, BUF has plenty of LD:
Dahlin
Power
Bryson - small 23 yo played 38 games this year
Samuelsson - 32OA pick in 2018 ;played 12 games this year
On RD they have:
Jokiharju - 22yo, former 29OA, should be solid 2nd pair
Risto - 1 to UFA
Miller - 1 to UFA
Borgen - 24 yo, 14 nhl gp total
2 other 3rd rd prospects with 0nhl gp.
They need an established RD1 with term...Andersson makes more sense than an LHD.
Other RD's w/o trade protection (years remaining)
Pesce (3)
Tanev (3)
Ekblad (4) - NMC kicks in July 28...
Andersson (5)
Ellis (6) - also Fabbro and Carrier
Marino (6)
Of course there are also a bunch more urrent/future RFA's like Carlo, Hronek, Pionk, Cernak, etc. Some would have easy paths to UFA if they didn't want to stay in BUF, though.
NAS, FLA, and CAR all have ED issues on defence (I suppose we sort of do, too).

Three orders of hopes and dreams, please.
At this point, our best hope is player(s) on the verge of popping, like Lindholm was.
It's risky, but staying the course is even more likely to fail IMO.

I don't care who goes or stays, keeping the same guys and hoping for a different result is madness.
Anyone doesn't want to be here should go.

So was Steinberg punching back a bit on Serivallis comments about Johnny? Because he didn't offer up much in that conversation that I heard. I actually didn't hear steinberg say anything about Johnny likely signing. Seems like the appropriate time to chime in there.
So what I gathered is, Monny is available, Johnny probably on the move according Serivalli. He didn't say outright available. But he's likely moving.
Maybe the Flames extend him but man I don't like that idea. I just do not have the faith some of you do that he can get it done on a deep playoff run.

Playing around with CapFriendly:
1. Lose Giordano to expansion
2. Use all of our picks at the draft
3. Sign Hall (6x6), Saad (6x6), Raanta (1x1.25), and a veteran defenceman (1x2.5-3, Edler?)
4. Sign all RFAs to QOs
5. Extend Johnny
Hall - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Gaudreau - Monahan - Mangiapane
Dube - Backlund - Saad
Lucic - Ruzicka - Phillips
Gawdin
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Tanev
Edler - Kylington
Mackey
Markstrom
Raanta

If thats true I could see Sutter wanting to become a tough team with building around the likes of Tkachuk and Lindholm then. Honestly this off-season could go so many ways I have no idea. Kind of exciting compared to the last two off seasons.
