Wasn't there a 4 year old character with lines about mortgages in Old?
I thought that was hilarious. Shyamalan after all these years still with such an impressive understanding of the minds of young children and how they interact with one another. Actually, make that people in general.

I think they need to throw even bigger budgets at Shyamalan.

When you watch Old, drink every time a character says the word "calcium." Or "midsize sedan."

I think he's got the business model figured out. He's never been a director adept at handling big spectacle and he was never going to be able to make hits on a $200 million budget, especially with his screenwriting ability having deteriorated so noticeably over the years.
But M. Night is perfectly capable of spinning money making schlocky high-concept B-movies on $15 million budgets. Movies like Old and Split and even The Visit had intriguing premises and also allowed Night to really lean into the heavy-handed ludicrousness he does so "well." And now he's back to turning huge profits.

That's exactly what they are, big-budget b movies. They're also unintentionally hilarious and frankly I have a soft spot for them nowadays

Exactly, they're hilarious. Worth a watch every time.
M. Night is at his worst when he starts veering into mythological fantasy and melodrama. That's when he loses sight of the characters and his movies get boring. His most boring movies are Lady in the Water, The Last Airbender, and After Earth, and they all have a few things in common: they cost a ton of money to make, they're full of fantasy backstory that Night doesn't really care about or know how to explain, and they're way too long (probably because of the studios/budget).
M. Night is in his wheelhouse when his settings are limited, he doesn't have a ton of characters to write, and his movies are max 90 minutes long. Bonus points when he has a limited budget to work with because that's when he gets the most creative/ridiculous with his visuals.

I love how he always makes himself a pivotal character in each movie. He understands that if the emotional core of a film needs to be a 1000 pound anchor, it's best to go in there and do it yourself instead of relying on mercurial 'actors'.

Dune, I know I am late to the game, but it was an enjoyable film and I had no knowledge of the story or books before going .

Highly highly recommend.

Absolutely agree, both Hoffman's kid and Alana Haim really surprised me, they were incredible. Was kinda cool seeing her real sisters in the movie as well. Close in tone to Punch Drunk Love, very welcome type of film right now.

Just plugged mine into here and it gave me a great list of stuff to watch. Not a lot I haven't heard of before, but definitely stuff I want to check out.

Recently watched 2 great films that had to be my favorites of 2021.
Dune: I'm a big Dennis Villenueve fan and he does not disappoint with this well paced visually stunning adventure. It's got everything you want in a film with excellent cinematography and fun action along side well written and acted characters. I was impressed at how efficiently the epic story was set up in the first half of the movie with minimal exposition. This allows the 2nd half to just tell the story keeping me on the edge of my seat. The only issue is this is a part one and abruptly ends. I would have been happy to take an intermission and watch the rest. 10/10
The Green Knight: I wasn't sure what to expect from this Arthurian fantasy. It's a bit strange and slowly paced but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen waiting for the mystery to unfold. Credit to the excellent cinematography creating a mystical world and some great acting from Dev Patel. I like how the audience isn't treated like idiots who need everything explained but the story is simple with enough clues to reach your own conclusions. 10/10

Brilliant performance from Richard Dreyfuss in that movie. It goes a little over the top with the sweetness at times, but overall it's a terrific, charming film and a nice tribute to teachers in general. Every one of us had a Mr. Holland at one time in our lives growing up.

You know what? We see this type of joke all the time “drink whenever so and so says X or Y”, but nobody ever really embraces the challenge.
So I will do so good sir. I will commence watching this anticipated train wreck of a movie and will drink every time I hear calcium or midsize sedan. Only question now is how big of a “drink”? Like a full on shot? Swig of beer?
I shall report back the night I do it and let you all know how drunk I am post watch.

The Visit was an absolute delight.
Nothing like murderous frail old people sneaking up on you and using their adult diapers as weapons.
You'll only get this quality of entertainment under Shamalamadingdong's masterful direction.
