Default Crave TV

I just saw a few commercials for this, coming Dec 11 and am pretty excited about it.

I find 95% of what I watch on Netflix is TV series'. I dont think it would replace Netflix for me, but could be good to supplement it.

Here's the link, What do you guys think?

It's Bell and Telus TV subscribers only. Good for me- maybe not everybody else.

Yep. And Shomi is for Rogers and Shaw subscribers.

Interesting that the major telcos are getting into online streaming services.

I think I'll just stick to Netflix for now but I'm interested to see the selection on these two new services

I keep wondering if there is a way the telecos could ever somehow "throttle" Netflix/Apple tv to push folks to use thier services.

I feel like it has commercials since commercial-free isn't explicity stated in the tv spots I've seen.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

Initial launch will be commercial free.

Being only $4 a month, I would anticipate commercials.

I wonder how Telus will feel about me dropping $18 worth of channels to pick up this...

If $4 per month vs. $8 is the difference between commercials and commercial free, then go ahead and jack up the price. Call it a first world problem, but having to routinely sit through commercials would be enough to leave me content with my current set up of multi-region Netflix.

I don't get the draw of these new services if none of my media boxes or TVs can even play them.
Netflix is great because basically every player or SmartTV can play it. I assume Shomi/Crave will be able to play through their supporters cable boxes at some point, but if the main consumption has to come via iOS or web browser, thats a big sticking point

Just hit the Shomi web site (or at least Shaw) and it stated that Shomi can be streamed right through cable boxes. So...if you already sub to Shaw, you can do it this way or through any other device that has access to wifi or the Internet. Tough to find what content is on Shomi though. Not sure why I would pay for this when I have and like Netflix.

I'm trying to figure out if I should get SHomi. I was looking through the menu briefly last night, and checked out Family Guy. It has up to and including season 11, season 12 just finished, I think. I have to check out the movies a bit better.
Funny enough my wife was just bitching about how much we give to Shaw every month, and wanted to do something about it. I think I could probably get rid of the movie channel and get Shomi instead.

Can you guys tell me what specifically you like about Netflix? Is it watching old shows or what? I'm not sure I see the benefit of it, other than saving money.
For instance, let's say you didn't want to pay your cable company for HBO , but you wanted to be able to watch the Walking Dead and discuss the new episode on CP the next day. Does Netflix/SHomi/Crave, alllow you to do this?

Just like the selection on Netflix and the ability to switch regions (I'm using Un Block Us) for different content. New shows don't appear that quick on Netflix, so you can't watch the episode from yesterday for example of any show on Netflix. I do like their selection though.

Can't speak for the other services, but in trying to find out what Shomi has, I couldn't nail down a page that shows all the content like I can with Netflix for example.

And I know there is no basis for this feeling, but Netflix started it all and I would rather give them my money than give more money to a company like Shaw that is sheltered from cable and satellite competition in this country. Just my personal opinion. These cable/satellite companies in Canada continue to get rich off of us and still moan about competition and how hard done by they are.

OK, so you can't watch new shows, how long before you can watch them.

My tv viewing habits might be going that anyways, for instance I forgot to record the last season of Boardwalk Empire, and have watched all the episodes except the last one since last Friday, from Shaw on Demand. I'm starting to think this might be a better way of doing things, except for the fact you wouldn't be able to discuss the Walking Dead ep. every Monday on CP and at the water cooler at work. I'll probably do the same with the latest season of Hell on Wheels. HBO is probably the one channel I wouldn't want to give up, and all the sports and the golf channel.
