a legendary keyboardist who was a monster in the fusion realm and was a force of nature in all things jazz and improvisation died on February 9th at age 79 from cancer.

Now He Sings, Now He Sobs was among my introductions to Jazz. As a metal head teenager it was largely lost on me at the time, but lead me down the road to becoming a huge jazz fan, and drummer (thanks Roy!) and I think my affinity for trios in general is owed to this introduction.

Well known for his fusion work (which in itself is a huge catalog) but if that’s not your thing check out his work as a sideman with Stan Getz on Sweet Rain, hard bop stuff with Blue Mitchell or his extensive Latin inspired catalog.

Man, some people just exist on another plane, and don’t get the fan fare when they depart. This guy was something else.

and this man did. One of those guys you wish had way more fanfare when he was alive, but you know he was revered by his peers.
