He wasnt trying to "pick a corner" per se though.
Every hitter has a book on him of how to get him out. If the book says down and away, thats how you pitch him. If its up and in, then you go that route. If he cant hit a curve.....throw em repeatedly.
Its up to the catcher to call that pitch and set a target there....pitchers only job is to deliver the ball where asked as that is literally what they are paid to do....and Mayza has been good enough to do that very well all year, until that outing. He couldnt/didnt make the adjustment and it cost them huge, in no small part to the 3 batter rule.
If you start giving in to hitters and just throwing balls down the middle, then you are going to get crushed every time with how good hitters at this level is.
