Probably doesn’t help it’s an occupation mostly composed of senior citizens. I’m in my mid 30s and can barely see a thing if it’s not right in front of me. Can only imagine what some of these guys vision and wits are like.

What a gritty outing by Matz. I hope the Jays can score him a run to put him line for the win.

I'd be scared to be near Romano.

Why is Jansen always calling pitches at the bottom of the zone? This is terrible.

Jansen needed to stop them from nibbling around the corners when they didn’t have any control. If they get a hit, fine but at least give the defense a chance.

When the pitcher is struggling with control, the catcher should make the biggest target possible not trying to pick a corner over and over.

He wasnt trying to "pick a corner" per se though.

Every hitter has a book on him of how to get him out. If the book says down and away, thats how you pitch him. If its up and in, then you go that route. If he cant hit a curve.....throw em repeatedly.

Its up to the catcher to call that pitch and set a target there....pitchers only job is to deliver the ball where asked as that is literally what they are paid to do....and Mayza has been good enough to do that very well all year, until that outing. He couldnt/didnt make the adjustment and it cost them huge, in no small part to the 3 batter rule.

If you start giving in to hitters and just throwing balls down the middle, then you are going to get crushed every time with how good hitters at this level is.

The catcher has to make an adjustment. He kept going down and in to righties and down and away to lefties and Mayza simply couldn’t hit it. Had Jansen adjusted earlier, maybe the pitch would have been crushed but hitting a HR is still very difficult with guys throwing 95 and it could have easily been a line drive to a defender. You’ve got to involve your defense.

Goddamit, that's bad luck. Looked like they had something going there until that double play.

Bummer. But I guess they were due for a loss. Matz deserved better.

But yeah, when you go 0-7 with RISP, you aren't going to win the game. Reset for the next one.

Who would have thought walking 4 batters in one inning would lead to disaster?
