Default Ghana, educate me, please!

My daughter wants to go teach pre-school- grade 6 in Offinso, Ghana.

She is recently 18 and is a little naive in the ways of the world. Her Grandpa from her mothers side built a school there years ago and suggested she go out there for 9 months.. She has gotten ahold of this idea and is determined to leave in 6 weeks...

My concern is her security.. I have used a couple of my Intel sources to see what threats are there, but all our guys really have are threats of the military/terrorism veriety and not so much the general everyday local crime. Im trying to find out as much as I can and am hoping someone on here is familiar with Ghana and the town of Offinso to enlighten me on concerns I may have..

Im sure as anywhere, there is always a certain level of risk and verywhere has its typical crime. But would I be an idiot to let her go?

I had a friend spend six months in Ghana around 2004. She was 22 or so and had a really good time. I do believe she contracted malaria at one point, but didn't feel unsafe during the tour.

She was doing some sort of volunteer work, but I don't recall what.

I know a few people that have gone to Ghana (18-22 year olds), predominantly for some kind of volunteering program.

As with any travel, the biggest thing is personal awareness of surroundings. Pickpocketing and petty theft, while not extremely frequent, can happen.

The other key adjustment to consider is that she will look a little out of place. Ghana is a pretty warm country, but with that being said, most of the girls around her age that I know got several looks when wearing shorts and/or tanks. That being said, the added attention will be just that - no one I know felt seriously threatened at any point, though I am not sure if they went specifically to Offinso. As long as she doesn't go many places alone or at night, though, I think she should be fine. Travelling and volunteering at this age is definitely an invaluable experience.

If it's any consolation, it's probably the most developed / safest West African nation. It's a country with a burgeoning business sector, and lower crime rate than most other West African nations. It also has one of the highest-educated workforces on the continent.

I wouldn't say it's Japan-safe, but it's also not the most dangerous place in the world.

i beleive that the canadian government has a website that speaks to some of the expected issues in various countries.

hopefully you can convince your daughter to put the appropriate amount of thought into this before she committs to going.

otherwise see jokes above........
