Philly's not going to be able to afford Gaudreau when the time comes because of signings like this. He's probably getting 12-13m the way things are trending.

A good reason to move him out now, for the right deal, of course.
No time like the present.

He isn't going anywhere anyhow. Both BT and Conroy constantly crow about him, he will never get to FA.

Gaudreau has three years left on an outstanding contract and the Flames were a top team last year. This most definitely is not a good time to trade him.

Why? Johnny is a special player. Ray Whitney was scoring 77 points at age 39 for the Phoenix Bouw and Arrows. Johnny's better. I envision Gaudreau having a real Gio-esque back half of his career.

I am not a big believer in Patrick being more than a decent 2C which is not a bad thing but not someone who should be guaranteed top minutes or is a sure fire breakout guy. He was hurt all junior and has been pretty bland at the NHL level.
Not saying he is a finished product but Hayes is not holding him back at all

Hayes got a full nmc and expansion protection.
What a idiotic contract by Philly. Feels like they were morr willing to overpay to sign rather than accept trading for his rights for nothing.
I'd be shocked if he gets 20 goals this year.

This may be the worst signing I have ever seen. Ranks close to that hilarious 15 year DiPietro deal way back when (is he still being paid?).
If this is the type of a deal a NHL GM negotiates I can say with full confidence I would be a better GM for Philadelphia. It's almost as if the agent had pictures or something.

That is an amazing contract. The guy is getting paid millions annually for over two decades for 6 years of playing or being on the roster.

I think I figured out how the deal went down.
Owner "Give him 50 million over 8 years".
GM "We aren't allowed signing him to 8 years".
Owner "Then get it done for 7 years" (meaning 6.25 over 7 years)
GM signs him for 50 million over 7 years.

Paying Hayes a few million more than what many felt he was worth is not going to affect whether Philly can afford Johnny or not.
Premium players will always get paid and teams will always find a way to pay them.

So every player better than Ray Whitney will be scoring plenty at 39 years of age?
Someone forgot to tell Lanny McDonald.
I wouldn't used the outlier to prove the premise.

Yep that was an absolute waste of a draft pick. This deal gets him on July 1 for sure.

With the young players with RFA status starting to command more money, the salary paradigm has to shift because there isn't more money in the system. If the young star player is going to get more money, it's going to come from someone. So with that shift currently in place, a Contract like this is going to become a serious problem.
Guys like Hayes will need to go from being 6 million dollar guys to 4 million dollar guys in order for the Aho, Tkachuck, Marners to go from being 7 million dollar guys to 9 million dollar types.
Unless it's a top end player, going to be hard to carry a player over 30 with a salary North of 4 million.
