Has anyone used one of these ancestry tests?
My oldest daughter is interested in our heritage and my Dad was not able to give me much information about our side of the family. I'm thinking one of these may be able to help.
From a genetic point of view, all humans are remarkably similar. Indeed, when the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003 it was confirmed that the “three billion base pairs of genetic letters in humans [are] 99.9 per cent identical in every person.” There are, of course, genetic differences that occur more frequently in certain populations – lactose intolerance, for example, is more common in people from East Asia. And valuable research has explored the health significance of genetic variation. But there is simply no reason to think that your genes tell you something significant about your emotional connection to a particular cultural heritage. There isn’t a lederhosen gene.

Yes I have, and a number of my relatives. I think it is pretty damned accurate, and it has linked me up with family I was not aware of and nailed my heritage as far as Im concerned. Worth the price and it provides really interesting information. Used Ancestry dna.

I think by now everyone knows these are not exact scientific results and that there is no Italian or Irish DNA. However for my results, not only did it correctly match me with family members but it almost exactly told me where my known ancestors were from. Other parts are more mysterious but after some digging in our family tree, they now seem plausible.

I do not feel at all comfortable giving a corporation my DNA. To much we don't know about it, and what could be done in the future. Hard pass.
People seem to be on board with paying for the privilege of a corporation listening and tracking everything you say in your home, so might as well just pay to give them your DNA too!

If they can find a use for my DNA they can go nuts. I think people underestimate how easy it would be to get your DNA anyways if they were some evil corporation with plans for world domination.

Like insurance companies discriminating against you and not covering or charging you more? Sounds great, sign me up!
It's such an immature field at this point it's just to early to gamble on that. Yes, sure, my DNA is easy to grab if someone really wanted it, but that's not how corporations work. They'll use the easy to get stuff first.
honestly I’d be surprised if the Ancestry tests were that advanced to be useful. Maybe if you did the full 23 and me test where it’s a full breakdown of your entire genetic structure or whatever.

Congratulations on learning about your previously unknown, pre-existing medical conditions! You can no longer plead ignorance when applying for insurance!

I always thought this reasoning was ridiculous. You don’t want to know about a genetic disease due to insurance premiums???
