There was a strong consensus on this forum that Johnny was playing timid. Maybe that was true and Ward saw it as well. Putting him on a line with Lucic should improve that issue. If it was an issue.

Interesting for Monahan and Gaudreau.
Monahan gets freed up from the defensive role in his own zone ... maybe gets him out of the funk.
Gaudreau on his off wing almost forces him to shoot from the inside (though forwards free lance out of their own zone any way I suppose). His shot distance and inkblot show he's taking way more shots from the outside this year. A move from the right wall is improving his look instead of hurting it.

Thought this was interesting from #Flames head coach Geoff Ward about the reasoning of putting Gaudreau with Lucic/Ryan: "It takes a little bit of the focus away from Johnny. Hopefully he’s able to hide in the weeds and pop into holes and get pucks back...
..The other benefit to us is with Looch does a really good job of saving pucks in the offensive zone. That may give us the opportunity to have Johnny get the puck more in the offensive zone.”

Really like the first 3 lines. Pretty well balanced and it seems to me like Ward is trying a a balanced approach of 2a 2b 2c with each working another's weakness. Monahan has been struggling and moving him to the wing to remove some of the centre burden away may be the cure that ails him.
I expect the 4th line to play 5 minutes max. The leftovers.

Johnny is playing with Monahan before the 1st period is over. Book it.

I like the lineup. It's not the lineup that's going to be the norm if this team is going to be successful this season, but based on the play of the the past few weeks it's at least based on meritocracy. Aligning things that way could help nudge under-performing players back into the roles and levels they need to be playing at and at the same time give those deserving of opportunities to play above where they are traditionally slotted.

I think that 2nd line is misleading because Monahan will for sure be taking more faceoffs than Backlund, since Backlund is bad at them and Monahan is good at them. Also, Monahan mostly scores from the middle. Maybe they criss cross in the defensive zone?

I'm loving the new lines purely for the entertainment value.

As someone who saw both of those goals live (last year and in 2017/18), I'd be happy if THAT streak ended...

Ditto.
This third line is going to be bottled up in our zone all night. I can't see having Lucic out there making a difference on Johnny's seemingly timid play. This isn't the McSorley days.

I would rather see the Flames try the new lines for a much longer period of time.
Old 1st line with Monahan & company is just not working.....

I haven't seen Ryan or Lucic get bottled up that much. Lucic is surprisingly efficient with passes out of the zone IMO. And Ryan is just smart and hardworking.

Assuming Calgary gets a PP in the first period is assuming a lot.
