The clear intent of the GM was to bolster defense and improve goaltending in the off season. He isn't about the remove one of the 4 pillars on the back as that would make everything they did and all they spent to make a formidable top 4 pointless.
So he gets a 50% if the roster stays the same.
There is no way the goaltending as a stand alone metric is markedly better this year unless a kid bails him out - we have years of stats for these two guys, we know what they are (avg or slightly below). Each of the last three preseasons the new guy has looked terrible and we’ve comforted ourselves the preseason doesn’t matter only to get off to a slow start.
Only way the gaa goes down is if scoring chances are lower. Save percentage is likely to be about the same. So strictly speaking BT will have ‘improved’ goaltending because of better defence.
If scoring is a concern he better sort that out because as others have pointed out this roster maybe be at the point of diminishing returns regarding keeping the puck out of the net; he’s got a ton tied up on the back end and net. Unrealistic to think D will drive offence again like it did two years ago.
PP in particular looks like it will be a big deal to start the year.

I believe this is where the philosophical error lay in your proposal. This idea of "building to beat the Oilers" is a convenient invention by the media, but even before McDustpan arrived in Edmonton Treliving was already on record about the importance of building from the goal out through the middle of the ice. We now know that long before he traded for Dougie Hamilton in the same draft that the Oilers won Treliving was entrenched in discussions with Boston. We know that the Hamonic deal was two years in the making, which would set its inception long before the Oilers ever played a playoff game.
No. The Flames are not "built to beat the Oilers." The Flames are built to win the Western Conference and ultimately the Stanley Cup. This would require responses to a host of other better teams like Anaheim, Chicago and Nashville.

He needs to have Smith on a short leash and he better hope Parsons is more than just a Jonathan Quick lookalike (promising).

Gillies and Parsons are clearly the future. He has attempted to bring in Bishop multiple times as well, but that hasn’t worked out for various reasons.
Calling it the new “Get Jarome a centre” is crazy, because we actually have a solution - it’s just taking a bit of development time.

Best case scenario that is 1 season away. More likely 2-3. That will be 5-6 years without a real number one goalie (during BTs tenure).

Brightside, there will be no goaltending search this coming off season. Treliving is going to have a terribly boring June/July.

We would have had bishop if Ken king was on the ball so no.
Would the Flames claim Engellend to fill in as a 7th Dman/4th line winger? Pretty sure Engellend played some forward in the past? He would bring toughness and is a well liked pro
