You mean when he signed him, right? Nobody wants that contract right now.

Nobody wants anyone from the waiver wire right now. Especially Karl.

That contract was ludicrous.

When Karl was in Calgary this summer training, he was mentioning he wishes the Habs would buy out his contract, that there are teams interested, just not at the dollar amount he's getting paid currently.

Petrovic being on waivers means that Boston signed him to a NHL contract which means he is the first PTO to earn a NHL deal this season unless I am over looking someone

There really needs to be some sort of check and balance system to this kind of thing.
Thats all well and good for Alzner, he could get his payout and sign a new contract, but thats not all that hot awesome for his team.
Its almost as if there needs to be some sort of mutual buyout process where both player and team can agree to terminate the contract, the player gets a little less money but the team isnt stuck with the cap hit or something along those lines. Maybe a contractual clause? I'm just spitballing but Alzner is hardly alone in this type of situation.

There is already a mechanism. Both player and team can mutually agree to terminate the contract.
It is rare though because the player usually does not want to give up the money.

Thats sort of what I mean though, it would be great to have something more in the middle. Completely terminating the contract is going too far the other way.
A buyout is great for the player, he gets most of his money and the opportunity to sign another contract, but not great for the team because it costs them cash and only gives some cap relief.
Terminating the contract is great for the team because they no longer have any responsibility or obligation to the player, no cash, no cap, no player. Not so great for the player.
Thats why I was thinking of some middle ground.
