Wow. And we wonder why we have this pervasive NIMBY problem in Calgary.

People are up in arms over even slight inconvenience.

Or maybe it has more to do with this attitude of:
Let us discuss nothing!

Oh hey! Discuss away! But just saying:

Nobody should burn wood within City Limits, ever, for any reason, isnt a discussion either.

No, a wood fire place or furnace is vented up a chimney which above people’s windows in order to disperse smoke and pollution.

I'm glad that isn't your experience. My experience is that my clothes, my bedroom etc, all smell like campfire for a day or two after.

Maybe you burn a different type of wood than my neighbours. Maybe you have a better firepit. I can smell the fire pit behind me but it doesn't infiltrate my house like the neighbour next to me. The only time I notice it in my house is from the house to the west. They seem like great people we've had a beer once occasion but it is definitely a problem in my house.

I don't know mind people having fun in their yard until whatever time they want. I do mind my clothes and bedroom smelling like a fire pit.

I shouldn't have to close my window when it's 23 degrees outside.

A firepit doesn't have to be in a far corner of a yard. My neighbour had a firepit literally 10' from my bedroom window and they didn't GAF about anyone or anything. My AC intake is on that side of my house as well. On a hot night - whether my window was open or AC was running - there was a lot more than a faint smell. And the type of guy that doesn't care about proximity to his neighbour's house is also the type of guy that will burn crap wood, including pallets.

Everyone would be bothered by that unless they were an oblivious dope.

Boy, some of you really need to move out into the country. I can go months without noticing my neighbours. Sounds like that might work for some of you.

That sounds like a Subway commercial.

And contain embers. They aren’t free to blow from the pit in the breeze.

The bylaw does say you need to have a mesh to keep embers from blowing around.

I'm categorically opposed to fire pits and patio heaters. If it's too cold to hang out outside, just hang out inside. Do your bit to slow climate change.

Fire Pit Safety

http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Fire/Page...Fire-pits.aspx

  • Smoke from fire pits can cause adverse health effects in some people. Be aware of neighbours that may be negatively impacted to exposure of smoke from outdoor fire pits and follow the bylaws related to smoke.
  • Before using your fire pit, familiarize yourself with optimal wind conditions and take precautions to prevent smoke from disturbing your neighbors.
