So what?

And it was initially built because of a religion, but I will suggest it still exists for reasons well beyond that now and even atheist/all others appreciate its place in history and as such claim community ownership as much as anyone else.

Its a huge part of the Parisian identity much like the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysées, and the Louvre. Regardless of who originally financed it.

The pyramids exist because of religion and were built by slaves. Should we advocate to have them dismantled?

transplant99: So what?

I do not believe that it is reasonably possible to truly separate a building, which exists because of religion, from the issues of the religion (or from the religion itself) that caused the building to be created in the first place. That's all.

No, but I'm not sure that, should they become damaged or destroyed, they should necessarily be rebuilt either. Just because something is old, or historic, or cultural (whatever that terms means) does not mean that it needs to be (or must be) rebuilt or preserved.

If the people of France want to rebuild the Cathedral, fine, that is their choice. And if they want to pay to rebuild it out of their own pockets, that too is their choice. I just don't fully understand that choice, and I think that the choice may be misguided, but that isn't my call to make.

I’m sure the cathedral is an amazing architectural masterpiece. But the way the rich are willing to give money to rebuild it kind of bothers me. Like do they think they’ll get a better spot in heaven? Seriously there are millions of starving people in the world who could use some help from above. Heck there are probably tons of people in France that could use some help. So where are the rich people’s priorities? Oh right a fancy church. Crazy

many are likely already spending some of their money on other causes. doesn't mean they can't also help rebuild the church.

for example, google the bill gates foundation and look how much he and his wife have invested in helping people. much of it in third world countries.

We built cathedrals in the middle ages for the same reason we spend millions even billions on hockey or football stadiums now, they were monuments to civic pride that put a town on the map and brought in tourism, even in medieval times

Religion is no more responsible for wars or pedophiles than capitalism is responsible for poverty, people are responsible for all of it, what ever system or faith is irrelevant it is humanity that has the problem

The cathedral is the French symbol.
So much so that whatever place they colonized the first thing they did was build a replica Notre Dame like in Montreal.

There's talk about whether to rebuild the spire as it was, or to design a completely new one. Will be interesting to see what direction they decide to go

Please not another Royal Ontario Museum-style mashup. That #### never looks good.

1920's, Paris. Some good Cathedral shots, including one showing the spire/roof

The LV strip will preserve human culture and history. We've already got the Pyramids & Eiffel Tower. A smart capitalist will replicate Notre Dame.

It's a true shame what happened and a great goal to have Notre Dame renovated in time for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Extremely ambitious.

On another note, I'm really tired of the yellow vested morons protesting and damaging whatever they can in the streets of Paris. French citizens & foreigners alike - they protest for hand-outs from the government because their life sucks and it's not fair some people are wealthier than others.

I'd set up an exchange program for a year. Protesters found guilty spend a year in a Russian, Syrian, South African, Haitian, Brazilian.... And the list goes on and on, to give them a reality check on how bloody good they have it living in France.
