I'd be even more surprised if a country like Vietnam had the infrastructure for that. We couldn't even make a gun registry work for a billion $. Having a system for every hotel to log in to and enter, I dunno, tens of thousands of guests info every night? I mean, maybe they do. I'd be surprised though.

As I said earlier, I can speak from personal experience of having cops visit me in my hotel, the same evening that I arrived at a hotel, in several places in both China and Vietnam. Granted they were in remote areas but it's certainly possible.

Yeah I never had to surrender my passport for the night, but I definitely had police visit me, whether it was out of curiosity or necessity nothing serious came out of it. In China I got disallowed from a couple hotels and was escorted to nicer ones, not sure to what end, perhaps they paid for a different permit?

I definitely had my passport taken to local police stations in different parts of China for registration. Everywhere I've ever gone in SE Asia or the subcontinent is just a photocopy however. I remember all over the Balkans around 2007 officers would come onto a bus or train going across a border and gather all the passports, leave with them all, them come back and hand them out. That was always really unnerving. . .

You see this all the time on social media. People saying the ones video taping and not stepping in are just as bad as the person attacking someone. For example there was the older lady on the subway in New York every internet tough guy jumped in on that one not having a clue who was behind the camera and the situation dissolved pretty quickly after granny took a kick to the head but had someone jumped in who knows what would have happened. In the end the POS was caught from all of the video.

Now at the same time there will be situations where you probably need to step in to avoid loss of life but even in that situation I can say all day I would do the right thing but put in the situation I don't know, should we risk everything for a situation we don't even understand?
