Pretty much means we are hanging on to Brodie until at least the deadline which actually might prove to provide a better return on him at the end of the day. Still terrible news

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson
Davidson/Yelesin

God damn it. This is horrible news. 2 years now derailed due to injury and right in our window to compete. Ugh

This sucks. Can't imagine only playing 44 games of hockey over 2 years is great for hockey development.

Second, probably won't change anything. The rules said first or second year pro. Valimaki is still a pro, even if he's injured.

Valimaki is a pro, but if he plays less than 10 professional games (NHL or AHL) all season, then this will not count as a professional season for him.

Last year already counted as S1. IF he were to play 9 games or less for the entirety of the 19/20 season, then 20/21 would count as his second professional season. Therefore he wouldn't be expansion draft eligible.
(Same thing happened with Gilles last draft)

Silver lining??

2 months would be someone doing a desk job. 6 months is the low end for a high performance athlete. With some time in Stockton, he should be up to full speed and one of those great additions for a lengthy postseason run.

I don't think that this changes anything for Brodie. Kylington was far too good to be the #7, so even if Brodie is moved, really only need to add a veteran presence to sit and eat popcorn and push the kids to keep them honest.

It was always going to be an audition year for the 3rd pair RD.

Kent Wilson already offering that up as the one "red flag" for Valimaki. I'll look forward to him connecting this to Brett Kulak some how in the very near future.

Gillies was exempt because the first season of his contract saw him play zero pro games and didn't count for an "accrued season" under the CBA. But once the clock starts ticking, it keeps ticking.

Yes, but they will still need to pay someone to be the 7th D. So the cap savings will be relatively minimal.

Both Brandon Davidson and Rinat Valiev make $700k at the NHL level. Assuming one of them is the 7D, the Flames would save $225k if Valimaki is placed on LTIR.

(Yelesin makes $925k.)

Would you even need to use LTIR on a guy with an ELC?

Also I would expect Petrovic to sign shorty here to by the 7, or someone similar. I think everyone you mentioned starts in Stockton

If those are the pairings then this will not just affect Valimaki’s progression, it will also impact Andersson (who would be on the top pair after a Brodie trade).
