Default Jersey Poll - All Time #55

Did this five years ago, thought it might be interesting again. Always fun to see younger fans and older fans arguing over different generations in a battle.

Will put one up a day whenever possible.

Have fun! and Go old guys!

How it works:

I pick off a key group of players for each jersey. I don't use every name, as that gets tedious and unnecessary (probably go with say 5 unless there are many that wore the same number).

I also don't put up a guy for the number he isn't known for (Iginla shouldn't win #24 for example)

Results:

This is the last one ... no real battles left on the board, just in descript players or only one guy to wear the number.

Rob Ramage with out a doubt. Although Rocky Thompson was pretty fun to watch for other reasons.

He may not have been a super star but Ramage was a force in his end and was a strong influence for our D during the Cup run & win.

Other than Smith who was at the end anyway when he came to the Flames....
the others are just place holders of who wore the number and not really discussion for consideration of best Flame who wore 55.

I was looking forward to the epic #62 battle between Rico Fata and Andrei Nazarov.

Rocky Thompson was the low-point of the Young Guns era for me, and showed how truly hopeless times were back then. Sideshows like him should come nowhere close to wearing an NHL jersey.

Steve Smith was interesting. He retired from Chi due to a variety of injuries IIRC. Eventually he was brought into Calgary as an assistant coach. Our team was so bad that after a season he started playing again, and it was pretty clear our blueline was so bad that he was our #1 guy.

Ramage I recall mostly as a healthy scratch during our 89 run. Speaks to the depth of that team.

Came in thinking Rob Ramage before I even saw the list. None of the other names budged me even a little. Ramage it is.

Nazarov, but both were pretty bad.

I voted Smith as he scored one of the biggest goals for us in franchise history.

My recollection is that during the regular season he was asked to play a physical, steady game. 16 points in 68 games. 150+ penalty minutes.

During the playoffs Suter went down and Ramage was asked to move the puck and first power play duty. He responded with 12 points in 20 games.

We don't win the cup without Ramage in my opinion.

smith wins the most memorable goal in franchise history, but Ramage was the better 55

Smith did his best work for the Flames wearing number 5.

You could have probably had a run off with Horak and Gagne. Both played about the same amount of games with the Flames wearing #51.

Little known fact, but Phil Housley also wore 60 one pre-season.
