I doubt that class is just watching movies. They're probably discussing things like jump cuts, match cuts etc.

If that's watching movies to you fair enough, but film studies is a "thing".

I took a film studies class in University and it was basically watching movies. We didn't talk about any of those things though. It was awesome, to be honest. We would watch all kinds of movies and then had to write a paper about movies or a topic that was similar. It was a great break from the hard work required for other courses! Thank you Liberal Arts requirement!
