“We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s chief executive, said in a statement. “Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in upfront and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home.”
The company said it was inviting proposals for its new site, which it said could have a similar layout to its Seattle headquarters, including an urban or downtown campus.
Bids for the new offices are due by Oct. 19, and the company said it expected to announce its choice next year.
Is there any possible way that Calgary could be in the running? Perhaps inspiring the redevelopment of West Village or something similar?
I have my doubts, They'll set up a second headquarters on the East Coast somewhere and most likely in the States because of the tax breaks they'll get.

It would be a longshot, hail mary, hope on a prayer. May as well submit an application but let's not get our hopes up. The main HQ is already not that far away.
I think Calgary should take a serious run at this:
-Close but not too close to Seattle HQ, with 7 daily flights between the cities
-Lots of office space available at low prices
-Cost of living not insane (compared to others that want in like Toronto)
-Highly educated workforce
-Strong presence in logistics (and warehouse space)
-Top 5 in the Economist Livability index (we gotta play that up)

There is no chance this lands in Canada because export issues would add at least a couple percent of cost before you get to the bottom line, likely more, and 90ish percent of their sales would cross the border.
Draw a line down the geographic center of USA, it will be east of that line.
This is a smart move by Amazon, they'll get communities to bid against each other and will get a very sweet deal.
Even if it could come to Canada, Amazon has listed 5 requirements, Calgary fails on number 2: "Regions with a stable and business friendly environment". Our NDP government tanks that.

So your saying having one of the lowest corporate tax rates in North America isn't business friendly?
Would love to see Calgary in on this but I just don't think we would be in the running. My guess is east of the Mississippi in the US. I'd put money on either Atlanta or Charlotte.

Yeah, As much as I think Calgary would be a good fit with the criteria they revealed I think they'll pick somewhere further east... Raleigh North Carolina would be my guess. I mean the City should still try but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Will piggy back off this post to and say Calgary has a lot going for it and unless Amazon thinks we're too close to Seattle already or not big and eastern enough we should really be taking this seriously. Educated and skilled workforce, space downtown or not, etc.
And say what you will about His Worship Major Nenshi but the guy loves this city and has the ability to sell it. Glad he'll be leading the charge and hope he continues to be able to.

This is a corporate office export will have very little to do with their decision. Amazon has alot of distribution hubs that handle products.
Skilled workers, living quality, and possibly land (and by extension climate) for Data Centers would be my guess on their needs for this office.

If creating a new data center is a primary objective then it makes even more sense to put the new office in the east. I could see Detroit making a strong pitch for this, inner city is rebounding and adding 50,000 jobs would really speed up their recovery
