All these games have been on ESPN+

Totally off topic but espn+ is incredible for college athletics.

2nd or 3rd gets you a chance at 1st.

You know that being the worst team means you have a 74.5% chance of not picking first, right?

I think the goal is to finish in the bottom 3.
At the very least it all but secures that they draft the highest they ever have.

Being a western canadian boy makes him a large whale over Eiserman for me, plus I think he's better, Celebrini is trending to be a game changer.

As of right now, the Calgary Flames would have a 58.3% chance of picking in the top 3 for the first time.

Classic Flames. When there’s no pressure they play well.

Flames will finish last. But we’ll lose the lottery and pick third.
Oilers get the first pick.
Flames draft a goalie with their first round pick.

trading our upcoming UFAs for the "right" packages could be franchise-altering. Our own pick is going to be high enough, but if the Flames can get additional picks in the first few rounds for Lindholm, Hanifin, Zadorov and Tanev, it could set them up nicely for a better future. Just have to commit to doing it the right way.

I would get some of those picks in the 2025 draft too. Not sold on this draft having franchise answers in it after the top 5 or 10.
I'd look to get a mix of picks over a few drafts and use the next 2 or 3 to load up on that next core.
That might allow them to get higher picks back too. More likely a team will pony up a 2025 1st than one from the draft they're scouting/preparing for.

Agreed, maybe try to sneak in some conditional 2026 picks even. Look at how that has worked out for teams like the Sens and Avs

sure, go for 25/26 picks too. As long as those trades are futures-heavy, I won't complain. The more picks you have, the higher the chance you end up with impact players.

The Carolina Hurricanes have realized that quantity really helps as far as the draft is concerned. Despite being a consistent contender, they have drafted 50 times in the past 5 drafts.
Many of their picks are out of Europe. High risk and high ceiling.
Timur Mukhanov, taken in the 6th round this past year, has a similar NHLe to Honzek, who the Flames took in the 1st round. The problem is that Mukhanov is tiny and is high risk. Their 3rd round pick from 2020, Alexander Nikishin, is looking like one of the best defense prospects in hockey.
From 2010 to 2017, 35 out of Carolina's 60 draft picks have played in the NHL. The majority of their picks have played in the NHL.
So yes, mid and late picks are still worth getting. Please stop trading them away for players like Carpenter, Pitlick, Fantenberg, Forbort, Shore, Chiasson, and Bollig.

Somebody there understands odds. Given that the draft is essentially random, the best strategy is simply to draft as often as possible.

Eiserman
Demidov
Maybe not Bedard level (generational), but all 3 look like franchise changing prospects

granted, I haven't seen anything from Eiserman - but then you come across snippets like that and it makes you wonder:
Quote:
Eiserman is the real head-scratcher. What do you do with a player who has the chance to be one of the best goal-scorers we’ve seen in the draft since Auston Matthews? With a game so incomplete, you question whether he will ever be able to take advantage of the truly special ability he has.
Eiserman is a floater for large stretches of time, and he can be a bit of a lackluster distributor. He is the kind of player who puts his head down and looks to shoot at every chance. He needs to diversify his skill set in a major way.

Good post. To add, though, having the majority of your picks play in the NHL isn’t that much of an accomplishment. Over the same period, the Flames also had the majority of their picks play in the NHL.
The real difference is in the quality of prospects they’ve targeted, as they’ve managed to get 154 NHL games per pick, while the Flames only got 122 (it’d be interesting to see where every other team falls).
Kind of funny point on top of that: From 2010-2017, their top selection has been their top player (in terms of games played) out of that draft only 3 times, and only one of those players currently plays for the Hurricanes (Martin Necas) while the other two play for the Flames. Out of the guys remaining (tops in games played out of that draft) the only other player that plays for the Hurricanes still is Slavin.
Doesn’t say much more than we know (lots of picks is good, hitting on your picks is better), but also goes to show that it provides a lot of flexibility so that you’re not over-dependent on hitting on your picks AND keeping them in the fold.
