It could be, the team has 2 very solid goalie prospects that management is very high on, signing a long term goalie would've bad for their development. Can't really see how someone thinks this isn't a decent trade. Options were limited and the flames didn't give up their first. It's all good

If you're so smart, why don't you suggest a better (and actually *possible*, as opposed to a wonderfully favourable to only the Flames) solution?
Much better than whining.
CP is starting to sound like a nursery school. Really.

If one of those three goalies is so good that they are the starter on a playoff bound Flames team, and are the reason the Flames make the playoffs, that's okay. Sure it would be nice to have the 2nd round pick, but to have one of our goalies perform that well at a young age, is a problem every team would take. If the Flames tabbed one of those guys as the starter now, and missed the playoffs, I'm guessing the vast majority of people would trade a future 2nd round pick in order to make the playoffs.
I'm not a Smith fan by any stretch, but your view is fairly pessimistic. It's not on Par's level of hysteria, but still looking at the worst case of a good scenario.

My guess is they try to grab Grubauer or Pickard from Vegas tomorrow as well.

Steve Mason is far less proven as a consistent starter than Smith. I'd easily take Smith over Mason

I don't want to overreact before a game is played. Let's see how it all turns out.
My gut doesn't like this though. I don't feel Smith can help us go deep in the playoffs and I'm uncomfortable giving up a second, even though I agree it's a fair price.
Won't change my mind about the team. I still think they're trending the right way.

Treliving better work hard on recouping all these picks we are losing. Just look at what we have going into this draft it is pathetic. Start moving all the not needed bodies for picks Brad.
|
Who do you suggest has any value at the moment, that we'd be happy to get rid of? Bouma?
Based on average shots per goal (a slightly different way of looking at save percentage I guess) Smith was ahead of Miller, Jones, bishop, mason, Elliott, Fleury, Schneider, hellboy, mrazek and varlamov. Last year stats.

Because Elliott was a bad goalie propped up by a good team.
Smith was a good goalie dragged down by a bad team.

Mason also likely costs more, both in term and $

Smith is a great team guy but one more knee injury away from his career ending. I definitely think he'll regress and be hated more than Roman Turek next season.

I don'the want Johnson back. He was pretty awful the 2nd half of the season. Give Gillis the back up role. And wozers 4.2 million is Smiths cap hit after the trade.

I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the deal. We've given up second rounders two years in a row for 2 different goalies. I get that Hickey probably wasn't going to sign here because of our lack of faith in young defenceman, but a second should have been enough for Smith. He has worse numbers than Elliott.
Would have rather had Mason for free.
If Johnson comes back then we are no better than last year and down another 2nd and a prospect. Lateral move and gave us assets in the process. Mason was also a lateral move and wouldn't have had to give up anything.
We'll see how it plays out but as of right now I'm not a fan
