Johnny reaffirms that he wants to stay in Calgary. Says he loves the city and if they want to discuss an extension this summer he would be willing to engage with the team on that.

Great to hear.

Interesting to hear him not do the usual "We'll see what happens but I've always loved my time here etc".
He was pretty direct with his desire to stay here and how its up to management/ownership

I love Gio on this team, but if he loves it here so much then he’ll understand why we have to expose him. After a season in Seattle/traded to an actual cup contender to chase a cup he can come back and finish his career here.

Flames need to roll with Hanifin - Tanev as the first pairing with Valimaki and Mackey competing for the #4 spot to play with #3 Andersson.

Hanifin - Tanev (Andersson)
Valimaki (Mackey) - Andersson (Tanev)
Mackey (Valimaki) - Stone
LD/RD UFA

The defense is missing one important element that Darryl has to have.

A big tough defensive smash mouth defensive defenseman.

See Regher, Warrener, Gauthier, Mitchell, Greene, Marchment

Until he gets that, he won't like the defense group.

The team has to have faith in its drafting and development as the organization can't keep plugging holes with UFA's or continue to make Hamonic type of trades. The reality is that if Monahan and Tkachuk didn't have terrible seasons the team would have done fine with this defense group.

Loves the city of Calgary. Says he would like to get the contract done if it comes up this summer.

Doesn't leave much room for doubt, really.
Talk is cheap. Until the autograph us on the contract and the ink is dry, it's all lip service. Sure, Johnny would love to stay in Calgary long-term, as long as the terms are 8x$10M. We'll see if Calgary and Johnny can come to terms on what it would take to keep Johnny here, and then determine how badly Gaudreau wants to remain in Calgary.

Sounds nice and all but actions speak louder than words. We will see what happens this summer as he's either going to cut a new deal with the team or he's going to be traded. I can't see any other scenario unfolding.

Tkachuk: (paraphrased) "I thought this team was good enough to be a contender but some people didn't really feel that way"

Clickbait headline: Matthew Tkachuk and Darryl Sutter Butt Heads

From Sutter's perspective, that's true.
Everyone is saying Gaudreau, Mangiapane, and Phillips are too small to play for Sutter. I think when it comes to Sutter's need for size, the need is actually on the back end. See Tampa. Huge at the back, pretty small up front.

I think it's also very apparent that the Flames need a defenseman who is a PP specialist. They're still relying on Gio too much and he has obviously slowed down. The Flames were near the bottom of the league in defense scoring. This is something they're usually pretty good at.
and it's the first time in a while in which the Flames haven't had any defensemen on pace for 40+ points. It's usually their bread and butter.

Looking at the playoff games I agree completely. It's a pretty soft group we have. But just as importantly, we need some offense out of the defense.

This. The franchise needs to adopt a new philosophy that the depth roles on the roster needs to be from youth in their system that can graduate. You get the benefit of players that are both contract friendly, and possibly progressing throughout the season(s).

Don't be wasting money on older UFA's that aren't likely to move the needle forward for the team's ability to compete. Allocate majority of the cap on ensuring the top half of the roster is strong, and the lower half is cheap developing players. It's how the roster can remain competitive for a long period of time rather than a brief stint if they continue to draft well with their mid-later round picks.

Tkachuk gives me a vibe like he is not happy here. No evidence of that, just an impression.
