Calgary Flames' season dissection day is upon us…several players to talk to reporters this morning, including…
Mikael Backlund
Johnny Gaudreau
Elias Lindholm
Milan Lucic
Matthew Tkachuk
Rasmus Andersson
Mark Giordano
Jacob Markstrom
+ Darryl Sutter & Brad Treliving.
Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Sutter, and Treliving are the most interesting ones for me. Should be a fascinating day.
Monahan supposedly had surgery yesterday, Dube, Mangiapane, Mackey, and Nestorov were supposed to go to the World Championships as well. So none of them available.

Looks like Gio has considered the possibility of being taken in the expansion draft.

Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano, on the upcoming expansion draft and prospect of being taken by the Seattle Kraken:
"For me it's pretty obvious that there are situations to talk about…as far as personally, I've been here my whole career and love it here and wanna be here."

On locker clean-out day, captain Mark Giordano was asked about this summer’s expansion draft. Says he has talked to GM Brad Treliving about it and will circle back.
“it’s pretty obvious there are going to be certain situations we’re going to have to talk about.” #Flames
Unless Treliving is there to announce his promotion and the hiring of a replacement GM, I'd guess this means he's staying.
I expect a deep dive on the firing to ensure we're past the window for any meaningful work on the draft and then a low effort signing for the replacement.

"Firing me is a process."

I don’t know what the Flames are going to do but I feel like they will do something to retain both Gio and Tanev somehow.

Was kind of awkward to hear Gio have to answer the questions in regards to the expansion draft. If it was up to Darryl he would probably have no issues sending picks or prospects to Seattle not to take Gio but there's also a reason he's no longer the GM. I really hope the team does not give up futures for one year of a 37 year old player especially at a time when the prospect base is thin and the team is not good enough.

Gio says that he has a good relationship with Treliving and expects to have a conversation with the GM. I think he expects to stay and obviously expects Treliving to stay.
Asked about the construction of the team and if the core can contend for the Stanley Cup, he says that the core has added a few key pieces and that they are playing a better style. Admits that they deserve criticism for failing to get out of the first round.
I'm just so tired of Backlund and Giordano being leaders on this team. Longest serving members in an organization that has accomplished nothing during that time.
Listening to these two talk...it really is "what else are they going to say". They seem to really believe that if they had another 30 games or so that they would have got in.
"We have a really good leadership group" ...to what end? This is a losing culture that believes in itself despite constant failure.
They're both great community guys, and have had some really strong individual seasons - but with them as leaders this team has done nothing but falter, and their personal performances have also been very lacking when it comes to the most important games of the year.
The 960 guys make a good point. So far, none of the players are "owning" this failure.

This is well put. The results speak for themselves. Treliving, Giordano, and Backlund have all been here in leadership roles during a period of sustained mediocrity.

Calgary Flames blueliner Rasmus Andersson mentioned the mental grind of the season a couple of times and not anticipating how challenging it would be being confined to homes/hotel rooms for the 5-month season
