Confirmed Merryweather is the PTBNL from the Donaldson trade.

The Indians announced the completion of the August 31st Josh Donaldson trade today, sending right-hander Julian Merryweather to Toronto as expected.
To make room for Merryweather on the 40-man roster, Jon Berti was designated for assignment, per Sportsnet.ca’s Shi Davidi. The 28-year-old Berti got his first taste of the big leagues this season, starting four games at second base for the Blue Jays in September.
|
If he comes back from his injury and turns into a top half of the rotation starter, then the Jays will have at least salvaged something valuable from Donaldson.

Ugh. I feel nothing positive about Julian Merryweather.

The Toronto Blue Jays are believed to be down to five candidates in their search for a new manager and have begun in-person interviews to decide on a replacement for John Gibbons.
The identity of the finalists couldn’t be confirmed, although according to multiple industry sources, Joe Espada (the Houston Astros bench coach), David Bell (the San Francisco Giants’ farm director), Rocco Baldelli (the Tampa Bay Rays’ major-league field co-ordinator), and Brandon Hyde (the Chicago Cubs’ bench coach), are believed to be among them.

Sam Fuld and Rocco Baldelli have made strong impressions on the #BlueJays in their managerial search, sources tell The Athletic. No apparent front-runner; other, unidentified candidates are believed to be just as strongly in the mix.

Sam Fuld might be the other name.

They should keep Gibby around just to do the press interviews. Let the new manager not have to deal with it.

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to name Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Charlie Montoyo the team's new manager, a source tells Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.

I don’t know much about him but he seems to be a pretty good fit for a team on a rebuild with a lot of young Latin American players.

I'm good with it as well. If the players respect him and he hires a team to help develop players, that's all that's needed. Keep the egos in check to build a team atmosphere to develop - that's all that he has to do.

Tampa Bay certainly knows how to develop players so hopefully he can bring some of that knowledge to the Blue Jays.

So apparently Jays starting pitching prospect Nate Pearson was topping out at 104-105 MPH in the AFL last week. 95 MPH sliders too. If he stays healthy he could be a beaut wow.

I read about that too. Apparently Pearson usually tops out at 101 or 102 ( which is still crazy) but was throwing mad heat and the players in the dugout were going crazy when the radar gun was updating at 104 and 105.

While I don't know a single thing about him, it seems like a small potential for small potential type of deal. His numbers weren't particularly bad, so if the coaching staff think they can work with him, sure. I don't think either team is going to lose but Diaz certainly showed upside at one point, but alas, day to day is so mediocre.

The Astros acquiring Diaz means that Marwin Gonzales is as good as gone. Too bad, Marwin was pretty clutch and could play every position on the field but no doubt he was looking for a big pay day.
Thornton didn't make the Astros top 30 prospects at the start of the year but he had a decent season at AAA. Didn't get talked about at all in Houston during the year.
I believe he needs to be on a 40 man roster next year or he can be claimed by other teams. Seems like a pretty low price so I guess the Jays were ready to move on from Diaz.

The Jays have a glut of guys that can play the left side of the infield before you even factor in Vlad Jr. & Bo Bichette. Had to clear out spots.
Side note: The Jays recently hired Carson Cistulli the (brief) managing editor of Fangraphs and the (longer) self-depreciating host of their Podcast. Which is sad because I liked his podcasts but good for him for getting a job in baseball.
