I like Hamonic.
Out of our top 8 D only 3 are what I would call gritty defensive dmen.
Prout is replacement level and Stone isn't quite as good as Hamonic.
We need that balance on our backend as Brodie, Hanifin, Valimaki and Andersson are all more offensive minded and less physical than Hamonic or Gio.
I hope we re-sign him.

Hamonic is almost certainly going to sign for less than 5.1 million, so unlike Josi he is going to sign for less of a percentage of the cap than the original contract he signed, this despite them both being 30 years old.
Hamonic is the 76th highest paid dman in the NHL. I suspect someone could make a pretty strong argument he is no higher than the 76th best dman in the NHL, thus somewhat indicating that what he makes is right around the value he holds across the league. Saying he is on a value contract was just kinda something that was made up to justify giving up a 1st and two 2nds for a number 3-4 dman.
|
If you want to talk cap hit and not actual salary, then do so. That makes Hamonic's contract the 94th highest.
Any team would take Hamonic on his current contract in a heartbeat. Comparing him to Roman Josi is a bit unfair - Josi is an extreme outlier IMO. Maybe compare his contract to other 28 year olds like Tanev, DeKeyser, Gardiner, Bogosian, etc. It's good value.

by early January the NHL and NHLPA need to decide if there will be a 2020 World Cup
NHL does not want to repeat the 04 World Cup where a lockout immediately followed the World Cup
it may lead to some interesting CBA discussions like changing the timing of re-opening the CBA, extending the CBA, Olympics etc
IIHF, NHL, NHLPA had a meeting about the Olympics
players remain adamant that they play in China
there is some political friction between Fasal (head of IIHF) and the IOC
Bergevin has let all GMs know he is open for business in terms of trading a forward
May soon have 16 healthy forwards and may lose one to waivers for nothing.
Names mentioned: Plekanec, Sherback, de la Rose, Deslaurier
Leafs don't want to go above $6.5 mil per with Nylander because it will effect how they fit in Matthews and Marner
Nylander is concerned that if he signs for around $6.5 he could be traded. He is not eligible for NTC/NMC in his RFA years
WJC games in Victoria 100% sold out and Vancouver is 84% sold

What does history suggest that a goaltender of Bobrovsky’s level is worth, with say, 50 games left on his contract?

Leafs have effectively screwed themselves with Nylanders situation. Their best hope is to be up front with him and get a 2nd or 3rd dman for him to a team that has the capspace for him at $7.7MM or so.

What is this fascination with giving up good organizational assets like a roster centre, a high pick and one of the team’s top prospects for a rental unless we figure it’s this year or bust for the Flames’ Cup chances?
Flames are not a serious contender this year and should not be trading any significant assets for pending UFAs.

What is the fascination with jumping to the most unlikely conclusion from the post you responded to? It goes without saying, he wouldn’t be a rental. That’s why you’d do it.
Although personally I’m a huge fan of Jankowski and would rather see a D prospect go with a Goalie prospect and a pick.

Not sure Bob would want to sign here. Seems like the Russians want to go to New York / Florida where there have big russian communities.

How are you sure he wouldn’t be a rental? He is a pending UFA so he would be a rental or someone we would likely have to make by far the highest paid player on the team.
This last summer was fun the Flames has cap space and were able to sign a big UFA and a couple of high profile RFA’s. Tkachuk is plying his way into a 7-8M per deal. Frolik is playing minimal 4th line minutes so there likely will not be teams lining up to send a draft pick to take the 4.2M off our books. Stone could be in the press box at points this year so I don’t see his 3.5 easy to move.
For one the Flames do not have a 2nd this year and our prospect pool is as thin as they come especially if Dube, Valimaki, and Andersson all graduate as it appears they will this year.

But Russians also tend to go to whichever team pays them the most...
Also, The Flames would probably be a contender if they had Brobovsky.
The problem is, since he's a rental, they would only be a contender for one season.
Is it worth it? Probably not, since the Flames are already short on tradable assets.

Flames are used to being a contender for one season and then, well not being one. May as well swing for the fences while the core is young. Maybe Bob loves it in Calgary and stays put? Who knows.
Problem being, playoff Bobrovsky is no playoff Bennett. He doesn't tend to bring his 'A' game then.

Also, re: Schneider, he's been injured the better part of the past 2 seasons and - this is purely a guess - might be staring down hip surgery

Scott Darling has three years remaining at 4.15 million, I wonder if Bill Peter's is interested?

Darling showed up to camp overweight and uninterested - for his first gig as a starter.
I'm sure Peters will have plenty to say if Treliving thinks about that one.

As long as BT is not interested I am ok with whatever Peters thinks of Darling.
