At some point Hurricanes will have to waive an NHL goalie. Will be interesting to see how Flames goalies play up until then. None are meaningful upgrades or a long term answer but let’s see how next 5 or 6 games go.

The difference between $27M and $30M is an extra NHL player. Perhaps two. If you have championship aspirations, you're gonna need the extra body.

With the Leafs showing they don’t need Nylander for even more additional scoring it’s looking more and more like he should be traded for some defensive help. What team is best positioned to offer that while needing some high end talent added to their top 6 forwards ?
I could see Nashville being a player honestly.

I'm sure he'd be a great fit, but what defenseman would Nashville be willing to give up? Maybe Ekholm?

This season I think the Leafs should keep Nylander and roll with something like this:
Marleau-Matthews-Kapanen
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Leivo-Kadri-Nylander
Johnsson-Lindholm-Brown
Kappi looked good with Matthews and Kadri needs some skilled players on his wing.
This season the Leafs can hopefully get a rental to fill in on RHD.
Next season though depending on the cap situation it might be a good idea to trade someone for a RHD.

I just hope William Nylander stays away from the Ducks or Canucks.

You're probably right that Ekholm alone wouldn't be enough, but he's an important cog in a perennial contender. He definitely has value.

My first reaction to the proposal was actually that there’s no way Nashville would do that deal, but after reflection that’s a pretty fair deal for both sides. Ekholm is really good.

There is also the fact we don’t really have to cap room to sign him long term, replace Smith next summer, and re-sign Tkachuk

Oh come on, he's not even close to Rielly. Rielly will get you 50+ points and was #2 in QOC in the ENTIRE NHL last season. That's right, Ekholm is badly sheltered next to him.
Stop underrating the legit #1 D, Morgan Rielly.
Let me guess, Ekholmm is sooo much better than Rielly defensively, right? Let's see Ekholm handle Rielly's minutes before we claim that.

You know how everyone believes Leafs can't win a cup with their D? Nashvilel can't with that set of forwards. That's a steal for Nashville.

What an odd stat to cherry pick, obviously Ekholm is going to be ‘sheltered’ compared to Reilly, as he’s not on the first pairing.

Morgan Rielly, the most overrated #1 D.

Why are people saying he'd be the best Leafs D then? What has he proven that he can be a #1 D?
Morgan Rielly plays BRUTAL minutes for a D. For you to claim it's an odd stat is a joke.

I don’t have any particular views one way or another on either team. I just think that’s a pretty fair trade from each team’s place of strength. You have to remember that Nylander needs to get paid, it’s not just the trade it’s the cap effects too. Which would be hugely beneficial to TO

Rielly is. He's a legit #1. All the #'s say so. Top 20 D last season in the NHl easily.

We would make it work somehow. Our cap situation is not as dire as some are quick to say. Our bad contracts are tradeable and guys like foo and mangiapane could step in.
I think we should focus on landing a long term goalie and fixing that situation first, but no need to jump on my post when I really only said it would be nice to add nylander.
