On-line Forum Attacker Gets Prison Time
This is an interesting case. A participant in an online astronomy forum got argumentative and insulting towards other users, then started threatening moderators and even challenged someone to a fight. Got banned as a result. Then it's gotten really interesting... Bingo, take notice!

Damn, that guy's getting more time than what Trump will probably get for selling out his country. Good job Murica.

Hence wanting to have a person's real identity as mods when signing up for a forum.. so if they're human garbage and only want to abuse others when they get banned then at least there's more to give the authorities than just anonymous email address.

... wait ... you know who I am?
Says the guy whose original username was simply his actual name, and email address on file with CP is his name at gmail.com.

It looks like the prison time was for the DDOS attack, not just his bad online persona. I don't think anybody has been mad enough here to try to launch a DDOS against Calgarypuck.

They're quietly biding their time, waiting for their moment.

Heh, most users registered before we started being more robust about registrations, so most people we wouldn't know unless they had voluntarily put in personally identifying info in their ID or email address.

We did have what looked like a small DDoS a few weeks back, it was minor enough that it just made things feel slow and was relatively simple to block (fortunately wasn't very many IP ranges). No way to tell if it was by a current or former member though.
But enough has happened that it would not shock me at all to have something bigger attempted.

Didn't read the full article but what was his sentence?
I'm definitely ok with people being held accountable for their internet actions, something I'd like to see more of TBH.

haiku is among
the best that CP has now;
always quality
Also, I kind of wish there was a random thought thread that had to be all in haiku form, or perhaps one day of the year where everyone on CP was expected to post only in haiku.

God of Hating Twitter

A site I used to own had its own IRC channel, it was full of "interesting" people include some hackers, one of them was all butthurt over something and happened to be a pretty serious hacker with a huge botnet.
He ended up doing so much damage we removed IRC chat for good to stop the attacks.

That reminds me of the April Fool's day episodes of the Drew Carey Show. Those were always fun.

An astronomy forum?
Was it some heated "Pluto - planet or not?" debate?

The guy probably would have gotten away with a fine, but he stepped over the jerk line and into an actually doing real damage area and doing something that has gained a lot of attention over the year with setting up a targeted cyber attack.
This is more about making an example of him then anything else and showing that they're taking his actions seriously.
I honestly don't have that much of a problem with the sentence.
